Przedmiotem artykułu nie jest ewolucja poglądów Leszka Kołakowskiego, lecz używane przez niego metafory (kapłana, błazna, klowna i szarlatana), obrazujące rolę filozofa w kulturze. Filozof jako kapłan wierzy, że głosi boską prawdę, którą powinni przyjąć wszyscy ludzie. Niezdolny do krytycyzmu wobec własnych przekonań filozof jako kapłan jest wygodnym narzędziem władzy, propagując jej ideologię i usprawiedliwiając jej działania, także najbardziej zbrodnicze. Błazen z kolei to sceptyk, który wątpi w możliwość poznania prawdy, a nawet w istnienie kryteriów pozwalających odróżnić rozum od tego, co (...) nierozumne. Filozof jako błazen pozwala ludziom zachować dystans wobec narzucanych im ideologii, dzięki czemu ratuje naszą wolność, zwłaszcza wolność mywiększych świętości, będących w rzeczywistości bezzasadnymi mitami, które sterują naszym myśleniem. Z tego powodu filozof jako klown przypomina, że filozofia jest przedsięwzięciem skazanym na klęskę, wszystko bowiem, co uważamy za prawdę, z czasem okazuje się iluzją. Szarlatan wreszcie to filozof, który zdał sobie sprawę z klęski filozofii, stając przed wyborem: albo przyznać się do bezradności (co sprawi, że będzie społecznie bezużyteczny), albo sprzedawać ludziom iluzje jako objawione prawdy (co sprawi, że będzie kłamcą). W ten sposób filozofia okazuje się przedsięwzięciem zarazem koniecznym (poszukiwanie prawdy) i niemożliwym (wobec nieosiągalności prawdy, ludzki rozum zadowala się iluzjami). (shrink)

Autor prezentuje mało znane fakty z historii polskiej nauki świadczące o tym, że przedstawiciele polskiej emigracji powojennej mieli bardzo dobre rozeznanie o sytuacji w nauce krajowej. W filozofii przykładem tego były kontakty Zbigniewa Jordana (1911–1977) z przedstawicielami filozofii pracującymi w kraju. Jordan przez wiele lat utrzymywał systematyczne kontakty z około czterdziestoma osobami, stanowiącymi elitę polskiej powojennej filozofii i socjologii. Do grona jego znajomych i korespondentów należeli m.in. Jan Łukasiewicz, ks. Józef Pastuszka, Tadeusz Czeżowski, Maria i Stanisław Ossowscy, Tadeusz i Janina (...) Kotarbińscy, Adam Schaff, Leszek Kołakowski, Jan Szczepański, Andrzej Grzegorczyk, a także przedstawiciele polskiej emigracji pracujący na uczelniach zachodnich. Dzięki tym kontaktom potrafił zrealizować naraz dwa cele. Po pierwsze, popularyzował godne upamiętnienia osiągnięcia nauki polskiej, dzięki czemu jego starania zapewniały ścisły związek między nauką krajową a światową. Po drugie, zapewniał historyczna ciągłość nauki polskiej, której nie przerwało nawet wprowadzenie komunistycznych porządków w kraju, które sprowadzały się do próby odrzucenia całej dotychczasowej tradycji. Autor stoi na stanowisku, że nauka stanowi najważniejszą część kultury i z tej racji dokonania Jordana powinny zostać spopularyzowane w całym środowisku nauki w Polsce jako przykład, którym winni kierować się jej młodzi adepci, koncentrujący się wyłącznie na karierze w zagranicznych instytucjach naukowych. Summary The question of rationality and irrationality — conceived as characteristics of human behaviour — can be discussed either in empirical or in transcendental terms. In empirical terms political behaviour is called “irrational” when it is predictably counterproductive, i.e. when the agents are able, but fail to calculate the outcome of their actions. This is a “Machiavellian” concept of rationality and it involves no moral judgement. In transcendental terms rationality or irrationality are measured by standards of the “rational human nature” (...) as defined in Platonic, Kantian or Husserlian manner.
