In April 1933, Albert Einstein was offered an ‘Extraordinary’ Chair of Physics at the University of Madrid. Einstein first accepted, then sought to withdraw without causing damage to the anti-Fascist Republican government. However, this proved an opportunity for the Spanish press to harness Einstein’s notoriety to their own programmes. This article discusses the genesis and resolution of this episode, which says much about Einstein and science and politics in modern Spain.

En diciembre de 1999, la revista Time eligió a Albert Einstein “The Person of the Century”. Fue, no cabe duda, una elección razonable, pero, como se argumenta en este artículo, existen también buenos argumentos para sostener que Turing podría haber recibido tal honor. En apoyo de semejante tesis están sus trabajos puramente científicos, que se esbozan aquí, trabajos que entroncan con la mejor tradición matemática, y cómo afectaron al desarrollo matemático, siendo finalmente instrumentales en la configuración de un nuevo mundo (...) tecnológico, tanto en lo que al cálculo y manejo de información se refiere, como en lo relativo al establecimiento de nuevas formas de relaciones sociales. Relacionadas con lo anterior, se encuentran las aportaciones que hizo durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial al desciframiento de códigos secretos, que, en cierto sentido, metafórico, se pueden considerar como una nueva herramienta para socavar la privacidad, ese derecho civil cuya negación arruinó su propia vida. José Echegaray y Eizaguirre (Madrid, 19 de abril de 1832-Madrid, 14 de septiembre de 1916) fue un personaje polifacético. Ingeniero de Caminos, matemático, físico-matemático, divulgador científico, dramaturgo, economista y político, alcanzó en todas estas actividades renombre: número 1 de su promoción en la Escuela de Ingenieros de Caminos, más tarde profesor en ella de diversas materias (como cálculo y mecánica), ministro primero de Fomento y de Hacienda después, ateneísta distinguido, figura prominente en la creación —con, esencialmente, las funciones que (...) hoy desempeña- del Banco de España, académico de Ciencias y de la Española, presidente del Ateneo,…. En este artículo se analizan algunos aspectos tanto del (cambiante) apoyo social, político y militar a la física de altas energías (especialmente en Estados Unidos), como la actitud de algunos de sus protagonistas. Asimismo, se considera la cuestión de la intervención pública, en el denominado mundo posmoderno, en la orientación de la investigación científica.

En este artículo se estudian diferentes cuestiones relativas a la dimensión ético-moral de la ciencia, utilizando para ello aportaciones realizadas por científicos a las dos guerras mundiales de nuestro siglo. Entre tales cuestiones se encuentran la relevancia de la teoría de la guerra justa, la actitud trascendenmlista de los científicos y sus consecuencias político-morales, y la disuasión nuclear.

Al mismo tiempo que se introduce la figura de J. J. Thomson, y cómo llegó al descubrimiento del electrón, entendido éste como partícula elemental, se estudian las aportaciones de otros científicos (como, entre otros, Faraday, Maxwell, Crookes, Helmholtz o Stoney) a la identificación de una carga eléctrica básica. Finalmente, se aborda la cuestión de la recepción del trabajo de Thomson.

En este artículo se defiende la importancia que para una mejor comprensión de la historia contemporánea de España tiene conocer la historia del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas. Al mismo tiempo que se presentan argumentos en tal sentido, se resaltan algunas de las características y protagonistas más destacados del Consejo durante sus primeros tiempos, y mencionan temas en cuyo estudio es necesario profundizar, cuando no iniciar. Aprovechando la circunstancia de que en 2001 se ha cumplido el tricentenario de la Universidad de Yale y el centenario de Instituto Rockefeller para Investigación Médica (Universidad Rockefeller), se resume la historia de estas dos instituciones, insertándola en el contexto de la historia de la ciencia, medicina e instituciones de enseñanza superior en Estados Unidos, al igual que en el de los distintos modos de promover la investigación científica.

En este artículo se estudian diversos aspectos de la situación de la física y la matemática a lo largo del siglo XIX, tanto en lo referente a las contribuciones que se hicieron en esos campos, como en el aspecto institucional. Al mismo tiempo se considera la cuestión de si el retraso existente, identificado por algunos como uno de los responsables de la derrota frente a Estados Unidos en 1898, estuvo relacionado con la deficiente situación de la industria y tecnología española.

La física cuántica nació en diciembre de 1900, cuando Max Planck, hasta entonces un no demasiado conocido físico teórico de Berlín, se vio obligado a introducir, para explicar la ley de radiación de un cuerpo negro que él mismo había obtenido poco antes, un tipo de discontinuidad de la energía, asociada a una nueva ley física: E=h·ν. En el presente artículo se explica el camino que condujo a Planck a semejante hallazgo, al igual que los problemas que éste planteaba a (...) su descubridor. Fue Albert Einstein, cuyas aportaciones también se consideran, quien en 1905 avanzó por la senda abierta por Planck, insertando de manera mucho más radical la cuantización energética en el seno de la física. Se analizan las influencias filosóficas que ayudaron a Albert Einstein en la construcción de la teoría de la relatividad especial, y cómo sus opiniones filosóficas cambiaron con el tiempo para adecuarlas al contenido de su física, un rasgo que es especialmente notorio con relación a la teoría general de la relatividad. Asimismo, se considera la recepción de la relatividad einsteiniana en el mundo filosófico; primero en el de habla alemana (los casos, especialmente, de Schlick, Cassirer, Reichenbach, Carnap y Popper), británico (...) ABSTRACTThe social content of affective stimuli has been proposed as having an influence on cognitive processing and behaviour. This research was aimed, therefore, at studying whether automatic exogenous attention demanded by affective pictures was related to their social value. We hypothesised that affective social pictures would capture attention to a greater extent than non-social affective stimuli. For this purpose, we recorded event-related potentials in a sample of 24 participants engaged in a digit categorisation task. Distracters were affective pictures varying in (...) social content, in addition to affective valence and arousal, which appeared in the background during the task. Our data revealed that pictures depicting high social content captured greater automatic attention than other pictures, as reflected by the greater amplitude and shorter latency of anterior P2, and anterior and posterior N2 components of the ERPs. IntroductionExcitability of the primary motor cortex measured with TMS has been associated with cognitive dysfunctions in patient populations. However, only a few studies have explored this relationship in healthy adults, and even fewer have considered the role of biological sex.MethodsNinety-seven healthy middle-aged adults completed a TMS protocol and a neuropsychological assessment. Resting Motor Threshold and Long-Interval Intracortical Inhibition were assessed in the left motor cortex and related to attention, episodic memory, working memory, reasoning, and global cognition composite scores to evaluate (...) the relationship between cortical excitability and cognitive functioning.ResultsIn the whole sample, there was a significant association between LICI and cognition; specifically, higher motor inhibition was related to better working memory performance. When the sample was broken down by biological sex, LICI was only associated with working memory, reasoning, and global cognition in men. No associations were found between RMT and cognitive functions.ConclusionGreater intracortical inhibition, measured by LICI, could be a possible marker of working memory in healthy middle-aged adults, and biological sex plays a critical role in this association. Lower extremity non-contact soft tissue injuries are prevalent in elite futsal. The purpose of this study was to develop robust screening models based on pre-season measures obtained from questionnaires and field-based tests to prospectively predict LE-ST injuries after having applied a range of supervised Machine Learning techniques. One hundred and thirty-nine elite futsal players underwent a pre-season screening evaluation that included individual characteristics; measures related to sleep quality, athlete burnout, psychological characteristics related to sport performance and self-reported perception of chronic (...) ankle instability. A number of neuromuscular performance measures obtained through three field-based tests [isometric hip strength, dynamic postural control and lower extremity joints range of motion ] were also recorded. Injury incidence was monitored over one competitive season. There were 25 LE-ST injuries. Only those groups of measures from two of the field-based tests, as independent data sets, were able to build robust models [area under the receiver operating characteristic curve score ≥0.7] to identify elite futsal players at risk of sustaining a LE-ST injury. Unlike the measures obtained from the five questionnaires selected, the neuromuscular performance measures did build robust prediction models. The inclusion in the same data set of the measures recorded from all the questionnaires and field-based tests did not result in models with significantly higher performance scores. The model generated by the UnderBagging technique with a cost-sensitive SMO as the base classifier and using only four ROM measures reported the best prediction performance scores. The models developed might help coaches, physical trainers and medical practitioners in the decision-making process for injury prevention in futsal. (shrink)

Esta entrevista realizada al vicedirector de la Real Academia Española, José Manuel Sánchez Ron, busca resolver las inquietudes que se formulan a partir de las posibilidades de hallar una conjunción metodológica entre la Literatura y la Física. Para ello, se toma en cuenta la organización especializada de la RAE, que se encarga de la difusión y la preservación del buen uso del lenguaje y la creación literaria. El discurso, junto con las personalidades que se dedican a desarrollarlo, cumplen también (...) un rol importante para ello, ya que sirven como ejes para construir un lenguaje apropiado del castellano. Para terminar, este intercambio de conocimientos será de utilidad para desentrañar cómo se desenvuelve esta dicotomía de disciplinas en otros ámbitos, como el universitario. (shrink)

The aim of this work is to analyse the influence of sociocultural factors on corruption levels. Taking as starting point Husted (J Int Bus Studies 30:339–359, 1999) and Graeff (In: Lambsdorff J, Taube M, Schramm M (eds) The new institutional economics of corruption. Routledge, London, 2005) proposals, we consider both the interrelation between cultural dimensions and the diverse expressions of social capital with corruption. According to our results, the universalistic trust (linking and bridging social capital) constitutes a positive social capital (...) that is negatively linked to corruption. In contrast, the particularistic levels of trust (bonding) can constitute a negative social capital directly related to corruption levels. Furthermore, cultures which are favourable to the legitimation of dependency relations and the formation of closed particularistic groups (power-distance and community factors) create a breeding ground for the development of these amoral rent-seeking structures. Pero esa relevancia se malograría si fuera interpretada en un sentido contrario a su genuina intención. Ella no está, en efecto, en abrir la puerta a un irracionalismo romántico ni en proponer un retorno a una fundamentación premoderna, metafísica o teológica, de la moral, anticipándose a buena parte del actual pensamiento neoconservador. Su originalidad y relevancia radican más bien en que el planteamiento materialista de Horkheimer incita a una decidida superación de las morales idealistas, formales y abstractamente universales, es decir particulares, hacia una moral postidealista de la compasión y la justicia universal. Since the mid-20th century, the study of Self-Regulated Learning has aimed to identify the distinctive characteristics that enable individuals to acquire new knowledge and skills under their control. The theory of Internal Self-Regulation vs. External-Regulation in Learning has postulated that a large number of self-regulatory variables are mediated by regulated/non-regulated or dysregulated features of the context. After signing their informed consent, a total of 616 university students completed validated instruments of SRL vs. ERL, behavioral regulation, regulatory teaching, and metacognitive study (...) control strategies. Using an ex-post facto design and correlation, regression, structural equation model and mediation analyses, the present research aimed to establish multicausal predictive relationships among the analyzed variables. Results indicated positive predictive effects between the external regulation variables on the self-regulation variables in learning [regulation /non-regulation /dysregulation ]; as well as positive predictive effects between SRL on SRB, RT and metacognitive SRS. Additionally, external regulation not only predicted but mediated numerous relations among the variables studied. Other findings and important considerations for future research in the field of self-regulation are discussed. (shrink)
