The paper interprets Kant’s neglected argument at FOUNDATIONS 401 as consisting of these two premises and conclusion: (1) It follows from consequentialism that in a natural paradise people would not be obligated to be morally good. (2) But this is absurd; one ought to be morally good no matter what. Therefore, consequentialism is false. It is shown that this argument is a powerful one, mainly by showing that independent grounds support (2) and that (1) may survive a number of (...) strong possible objections. One that it does not appear to survive, though, is that the paradise envisioned is not logically possible. (shrink)

In 1755 he became privatdozent and in 1770 professor at Koenigsberg University. His development as a philosopher may be divided into two periods — the precritical , and the critical, when he undertook the criticism of reason, set forth in Kritik der reinen Vernunft , Kritik der praktischen (...) "Repairing the Tower of Babel" addresses three major themes. The thesis begins with the question of how James Fergusson felt he could describe both Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Auguste Comte as influential in the development of his own theory of beauty in art. Following from this initial question, the thesis examines in detail the attempts at the reconciliation of Romanticism and Positivism at the beginning of the nineteenth century, especially in the works of William Whewell, Auguste Comte, and Samuel Taylor (...) Coleridge. In light of these attempts, the work looks at the influence of the developing sciences of geology, chemistry, and biology and the various methodologies associated with these organic sciences that were to overturn the Newtonian methods of science which had been followed throughout the eighteenth century. Finally, the thesis provides an overview of the development of aesthetic theory from John Locke to Immanual Kant in an attempt to outline the development of the fundamental dichotomies in aesthetics and theory of mind that the nineteenth century felt it must resolve. This paper argues for a conception of the natural rights of non-human animals grounded in Kant’s explanation of the foundation of human rights. The rights in question are rights that are in the first instance held against humanity collectively speaking—against our species conceived as an organized body capable of collective action. The argument proceeds by first developing a similar case for the right of every human individual who is in need of aid to get it, and then showing why (...) the situation of animals is similar. I first review some of the reasons why people are resistant to the idea that animals might have rights. I then explain Kant’s conception of natural rights. I challenge the idea that duties of aid and duties of kindness to animals fit the traditional category of “imperfect duties” and argue that they are instead cases of “imperfect right.” I explain how you can hold a right against a group, and why it is legitimate to conceive of humanity as such a group. I then argue that Kant’s account of the foundation of property rights is grounded in a conception of the common possession of the Earth that grounds a right to aid and the rights of animals to be treated in ways that are consistent with their good. Finally, I return to the objections to the idea that animals have rights and offer some responses to them. (shrink)

Immanuel Kant probably counts as one of the most important European philosophers. In advance of his 300th birthday in 2024, in the context of the Kant Decade (since 2014), many activities have shed new light on several aspects of his work, but the importance of Kant's basis, Konigsberg, both town and Albertus university, has been widely neglected. This was the reason why the Historische Kommission fur ost- und westpreussische Landesforschung, the Ostpreussisches Landesmuseum, the Institut fur Kultur und (...) Geschichte der Deutschen in Nordosteuropa and the Civic Museum in Luneburg organized an interdisciplinary conference in Luneburg in 2021 which is documented in the present volume. The articles discuss the importance of Kant for the theory of humaneness, his early years, the developments at the university of Konigsberg in the second half of the 18th century, as well as the later reception of Kant. Noticia del texto El escrito cuya traducción el lector tiene entre sus manos nunca llegó a publicarse en vida de Kant, sino años más tarde por obra de Dilthey (1889). Fue redactado en el contexto de una polémica intelectual que, por ese entonces, agitaba la vida académica alemana. En efecto, luego de la publicación de la Crítica de la razón pura en 1781, las reacciones –tanto positivas como negativas– no se hicieron esperar. Entre las negativas se cuenta la de (...) Johann August Eberhard (1739-1809), férreo defensor de Leibniz y Wolff, quien edificó una trinchera en contra del kantismo desde la Universidad de Halle. Para estos fines, fundó la Philosophisches Magazin (1788-1792), órgano destinado a difundir las ideas en contra del filósofo crítico. En 1790, Kant respondió a estos ataques publican do el escrito Über eine Entdeckung nach der alle neue Kritik der reinen Vernuft durch eine ältere entbehrlich gemacht werden soll ( Ak. VIII ) 1 y dio la disputa por terminada. En lo que respecta al texto que hemos traducido, ocurre que, en la cuarta sección del tomo segundo de la Philosopisches Magazin (1790), se publicaron tres artículos del matemático alemán Kästner (1719-1800): “¿Qué significa “posible” en la geometría euclideana?” ( cf. 391-402), “Sobre el concepto matemático del espacio” ( cf. 403-419) y “Sobre los axiomas geométricos” ( cf. 420-430). Estos artículos tenían el objetivo de demostrar la superioridad de la postura de Eberhard. Arnold Kowalewski (1873-1945) war der letzte Vertreter der Königsberger Kant-Forschung, die mit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges abbrach. Von dem unabgeschlossenen Projekt einer Volksausgabe der Kantischen Schriften in 5 Bänden, mit dem er von der Stadt Königsberg 1941 beauftragt worden war, um einen Überblick über das Kantische Schaffen zu erleichtern, ist allein das Typoskript für Band 1 vollständig ausgearbeitet worden. Der wissenschaftlichen Öffentlichkeit war der erreichte Stand der Realisierung unbekannt. Typoskript, korrigierte Druckfahnen und weitere Dokumente zur Entstehung der Ausgabe (...) blieben bis in den Sommer 1998 Teil des unveröffentlichten Nachlasses. Die besondere Bedeutung des im Nachlaß von Arnold Kowalewski bewahrten Manuskripts mit Dokumenten und Quellentexten zu Kants Lehrtätigkeit liegt heute darin, daß der anerkannte Kant-Philologe und -Interpret für seine Edition noch auf Texte und Zeugnisse aus den Beständen der Königsberger Bibliotheken zugreifen konnte, die seit 1945 verschollen sind. Dies gilt vor allem für die ausgewählten Texte aus Kants Vorlesungen über Anthropologie, Geographie, Logik und Metaphysik, die - wenn auch in sekundärer Überlieferung - durch den vorliegenden Band erhalten sind.
