When Gamurrini first published the Peregrinatio ad loca sancta, the narrative by an abbess of a pilgrimage undertaken to the Holy Land in the last quarter of the fourth century, he identified the authoress with Silvia, the sister of Arcadius' minister Rufinus. Heraeus, however, in his edition lends the weight of his authority to the view that the work was written by a certain Aetheria, and in his preface gives solid reasons for his preference. He also states that a thirteenth-century (...) catalogue of the Limoges Cathedral Library mentions the book under the title Itinevarium Egenae abbatissae, but he regards the form Egeria as a mere corruption. Background: We aimed to determine the smallest changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scores in the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire core 30 and the Brain Cancer Module (QLQ-BN20), which could be considered as clinically meaningful in brain cancer patients. Materials and methods: World Health Organisation performance status (PS) and mini-mental state examination (MMSE) were used as clinical anchors appropriate to related subscales to determine the minimal clinically important differences (MCIDs) in HRQoL (...) change scores (range 0-100) in the QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BN20. A threshold of 0.2 standard deviation (SD) (small effect) was used to exclude anchor-based MCID estimates considered too small to inform interpretation. Results: Based on PS, our findings support the following integer estimates of the MCID for improvement and deterioration, respectively: physical (6, 9), role (14, 12), and cognitive functioning (8, 8); global health status (7, 4(star)), fatigue (12, 9), and motor dysfunction (4(star), 5). Anchoring with MMSE, cognitive functioning MCID estimates for improvement and deterioration were (11, 2(star)) and for communication deficit were (9, 7). Estimates with asterisks were <0.2 SD and were excluded from our MCID range of 5-14. Conclusion: These estimates can help clinicians evaluate changes in HRQoL over time, assess the value of a health care intervention and can be useful in determining sample sizes in designing future clinical trials. Although higher-level constructs often fail to explain the mechanisms underlying motivation, we argue that purely mechanistic approaches have limitations. Lower-level neural data help us identify “biologically plausible” mechanisms, while higher-level constructs are critical to formulate measurable behavioral outcomes when constructing computational models. Therefore, we propose that a multi-level, multi-measure approach is required to fully unpack the black box of motivated behavior.

La Philosophie de la Technique compte des centaoines de titres a l'etranger mais reste balbutiante en France. Or la technique constitue bien le milieu universel dans lequel desormais nous naissons, vivons et mourrons. Il n'est pas sur que cette technique englobante, qui innerve notre temps et notre espace, puisse encore etre consideree comme un ensemble d'outils au service de l'Homme et comme une science appliquee. L'Homme suivant toutes ses dimensions, est mis en question par la technique contemporaine. La science est (...) si essentiellement enchevetree a la technique, qui est operation (action et manipulation), qu'il n'y a plus de science pure, c'est-a-dire neutre et innocente. Voila pourquoi la Philosophie de la Technique rencontre la problematique ethique non de l'exterieur mais necessairement et essentiellement. Que dois-je faire? depend fondamentalement de ce que j'ai la capacite de faire. La technique, qui a radicalement modifie la nature et le champ du pouvoir-faire humain, individuel et collectif, exige du meme coup que la question ethique soit fondamentalement reconsideree. Ethique et Technique n'intervient donc pas comme un chapitre quelconque de la Philosophie de la Technique, mais peut-etre bien comme le coeur meme de ce nouveau champ de reflexion. (shrink)

The text of Fronto is in a very corrupt state, and the startling discrepancies which exist between different collations, as well as the unintelligibility of many of the readings deciphered, seem to justify a good deal of conjectural emendation. I append some attempts to complete or restore the sense in some passages of the Greek letters which seem hitherto to have been left in an unsatisfactory state. In the last number of years scholars have discovered many new “parallels”2 to Francis of Assisi’s Admonitions.3 In this article I will provide more new parallels that I have uncovered not only in ecclesiastical contexts, but also in non-ecclesiastical ones.4 While almost all students of Francis’ Admonitions are acquainted with the general ecclesiastical contexts, most are unfamiliar with the non-ecclesiastical contexts evidenced by Cato’s Distichs, Daniel of Beccles’ Urbanus Magnus, Egbert of Liège’s The Well-Laden Ship, the Facetus, and a fourteen-volume (...) collection of medieval proverbs. From these parallels I will argue that the Admonitions of Francis of Assisi belong to the literary genre of Conduct Literature... (shrink)

“Multiculturalism”, “pluralism” and “tolerance” have become buzz words in applied ethics. While serious and well thought out work is going on in these areas, a misunderstanding of the importance of tolerance, and the difficulties raised by multicultural moral conflict seems common. In this paper I argue that intolerance of some cultural traditions is morally required, and suggest that the forging of a moral mono-culture is preferable to pluralism.

The object of this article is to discuss, defend, and supplement the only definite piece of evidence we possess which deals with the musical scalesreferred to by Plato in the Republic . In this first section I shall consider the list of scales given by Aristides Quintilianus and suggest the source from which it is derived; in the second part the employment of certain abnormal intervals will be established and elucidated; and finally the evidence of the preceding sections will be (...) reviewed from the standpoint of the Pythagorean musical theory. The majority of them have been preserved in chapters of Stobaeus’ anthology entitled ‘On the State’ , ‘On Laws and Customs’ , ‘On Government’.

Dans toutes les sciences, même en physique, la réflexion sur les expériences, les concepts et les explications oblige à repenser l'opposition de la nature et de l'esprit. C'est en raison de cela que la psychologie s'est vue contrainte de revoir la conception traditionelle concernant la relation de l'âme et du corps. Le corps est un système d'équilibres intérieurs qui ont une signification et qui, dans le courant de l'existence sont formés, entretenus, troublés et rétablis. En tout cela motivations psychologiques et (...) occasions corporelles sont intimement mêlées. Ceci est illustré par deux exemples, la conservation de la constance de la température du corps et de l'état de nutrition. La stabilité du « milieu interne » , C. à. d. l'homéostase, est la condition de l'indépendance individuelle de l'animal, et elle est le point d'appui de la liberté personnelle de l'homme. La régulation thermique est le fait de fonctions physiologiques qui s'exercent en accord avec l'existence personnelle. Cette liaison de l'existence et de la vie s'explique par le fait que, corporellement, l'homme ne réagit pas à des excitants physiques, mais à leur signification humaine. La régulation thermique dépend de la sensation de froid et de chaud et par conséquent aussi de relations et d'habitudes humaines. Le second exemple, de l'homéostase, de la conservation d'un état constant de nutrition, démontre, tout comme la régulation thermique, l'unité d'un état physiologique et du corps comme situation vécue. Ceci nous est montré par l'exemple de l'appétit qui dépend sans dute de sensations corporelles et d'équilibres intérieurs, mais tout autant des relations affectives. Le manque d'appétit, l'anorexie nerveuse, comme on l'appelle, se produit souvent d'une manière symptomatique dans les périodes critiques de l'existence, p. ex. à la puberté, au climacterium et à l'occasion de conflits psychiques. Il y a alors une disproportion entre le vouloir et le pouvoir que le psychologue ne peut comprendre que par rapport à la corporéité animée et animante, c'est à dire par le fait que la corporéité déjà organisée entre en conflit avec la corporéité organisante qui est constituée et par la motivation de la situation et par la liberté relative de l'homme qui donne à cette situation un sens déterminé. L'existence et la vie sont deux aspects de la réalité humaine, aspects qui sont susceptibles d'être analysés et auxquels le psychologue doit accorder son attention. La personne concrète est une unité de nécessité et de liberté, de nature et d'esprit, qui se forme elle-même dans sa vivante existence. (shrink)

This paper is a summary and extension of almost four decades of research directed toward an explication of the human mind. To achieve a precise, testable proposition that defines mind, I follow a historically rich tradition of materialism. First, an empirical basis is established wherein electropsychologically measured events from the brain, eyes, somatic and speech musculature occur almost simultaneously during a variety of cognitions. The inference is that these covert reactions form components of neuromuscular circuits governed by cybernetic principles. Conversely, (...) when the striated musculature is totally inactive, cognitions are absent. The conclusion is that muscular components of the circuits are necessary for cognitions. An explication of the human mind emerges as the selective interaction of bodily systems to generate contents of mind and to program covert and overt behavior.
