How should historians write Native history? To what extent should one privilege Native terms, sources, chronologies, and epistemologies? And to what extent should historians align Native history with concepts developed for other peoples and places? These crucial questions about emic and etic approaches to the past are cast into sharp relief in Pekka Hämäläinen’s award-winning The Comanche Empire. Based on materials collected during a fieldwork in Barnaul (Siberia, Russia) in 2001–2004, the article explores two provincial academic discourses that are focused on issues of Russian national identity. Ethnohistories of trauma address Russia’s current problems through the constant re-writing of the country’s past in order to demonstrate the non-Russian character of its national and state institutions. In the second discourse, ethno-vitalism, the struggle over constructing and interpreting the nation’s memory of the past is replaced with a similar struggle over (...) constructing and interpreting perceptions of the nation’s current experience. Produced by professional intelligentsia, these frameworks and discourses provide a useful link to understanding imaginary constructions of the national belonging in a situation where more positive ways of inventing traditions and imagining communities are unavailable or discredited. En parlant de cette découverte il nous introduit au coeur d'un voyage d'exploration qui saisit le muntu dans son essence et dans sa conscience historique, pour en dévoiler l'aspiration la plus haute et la plus noble, qui est celle de vivre sa vie dignement et d'occuper une place de choix dans le monde actuel. C'est (...) dans le but de donner une image de l'Afrique plus responsable d'elle-même et soucieuse de l'avenir de ses enfants, que l'auteur s'engage dans une lecture critique de ce continent et de son positionnement historique : quelle Afrique voulons- nous? Quels Africains y habiteront? Cela dépendra de ce qu'ils souhaitent et désirent. Il est donc question d'une réinvention, d'une reconstruction de l'Afrique et de ses citoyens. Cependant, l'auteur ne se livre pas à une lutte intellectuelle qui mettrait l'accent sur la reconnaissance identitaire de l'Africain, mais il s'interroge plutôt sur la possibilité de penser une nouvelle identité africaine. À cet effet, il prend en considération la culture africaine aussi bien que la culture européenne. Pour lui, ces deux cultures constituent d'emblée l'héritage de l'Afrique actuelle. Ainsi, pour penser le muntu, il faut le positionner dans cet entre-deux culturel afin de bâtir l'Africain que les habitants du continent veulent être.
