En Freedom and Resentment, Peter F. Strawson ha ofrecido una sólida argumentación en contra de la posibilidad de aceptar cabalmente una doctrina determinista y de que dicha aceptación se traduzca en una modificación de nuestras actitudes hacia los demás. Nuestro objetivo consistirá en ofrecer un análisis de la solución estoica al problema de la actitud hacia los otros en un cosmos regido por la necesidad. Partiendo de la matriz argumental ofrecida por Strawson, analizaremos los elementos que permitirán concluir que para (...) el estoicismo romano la sustitución de Actitudes Reactivas por Actitudes Objetivas no sólo sería posible, sino sumamente deseable. p { margin-bottom: 0.21cm; } O objetivo do presente artigo é discutir a concepção de Direito, Justiça e Estado no pensamento estoico greco-romano, demonstrando a atualidade do tema e suas conexões com problemas contemporâneos tratados pela Filosofia do Direito, tais como os da legitimidade do poder e do universalismo da ordem jurídica. Em um primeiro momento são apresentados e problematizados elementos centrais da filosofia estoica, tais como as noções de lei natural, liberdade interior, igualdade formal e universalismo. Em seguida, (...) mediante uma análise histórica e filosófica de caráter crítico-comparativo são apresentados os três principais projetos de república pensados pelos estoicos: 1) a república radical e igualitarista de Zenão (ap. 334 a.C. – 262 a.C.), na qual se nega a juridicidade, eis que o direito é entendido como construção artificial que impede a fruição da liberdade; 2) a república legalista de Cícero (106 a.C. – 43 a.C.), quando o direito natural é positivado para servir enquanto instância racional de auto-reflexão e de auto-fundamentação das normas jurídico positivas e, finalmente, 3) a “república” de Sêneca (4 a.C. – 65 d.C.), na qual o direito inicialmente se deixa absorver pelo poder pessoal do Imperador Romano para, em um segundo momento, mostrar-se como elemento universal, preparando assim as bases para a futura concepção de direitos fundamentais própria da modernidade. Las prácticas ascéticas propuestas por los estoicos romanos como vías de acceso a la vida virtuosa parecen, a primera vista, establecer un conflicto con la concepción intelectualista de la acción humana defendida por la ortodoxia estoica. Dada la función pedagógica que asumen dichas prácticas en el estoicismo romano, el interrogante acerca de su legitimidad doctrinal se vuelve inevitable, en la medida en que parecen admitir la ineficacia de la argumentación racional como vía de (auto) persuasión respecto de la (...) axiología estoica. El objetivo del artículo consistirá entonces en analizar dichas prácticas ascéticas, a fin de demostrar que, a pesar del origen pitagórico-cínico de las mismas, no sólo no contradicen la matriz intelectualista de la psicología, sino que, por el contrario, representan un dispositivo gnoseológico central para la dinámica de la comprensión desarrollada durante ese período de la escuela. Este artigo é uma tentativa de esclarecer a relação entre a posição dissidente assumida por estoicos antigos em seu contexto social e a maneira corajosa como defenderam suas posições políticas a partir de alguns princípios do sistema estoico, o que levou muitos deles ao exílio e à morte durante o Período Imperial Romano (terceira fase da civilização romana, que se estendeu de 27 AEC a 476 EC). Sugerimos que a marginalização desses grupos, bem como a sua perseguição, posiciona os (...) estoicos de maneira única, tanto em seu próprio tempo como no nosso. (shrink)

O foco deste trabalho é a compreensão da felicidade como fruto de práticas virtuosas, tal como sugere Sêneca. Aqui, são empregados pensamentos dispostos em quatro obras do pensador romano. O primeiro aparece em Sobre a clemência, escrita com a finalidade de tornar Nero um bom imperador. A beatitude verdadeira deveria consistir em proporcionar uma vida feliz a muitos. Desse modo, a felicidade de um governante só poderia ser a partir da felicidade do povo. A segunda ideia aparece em Sobre (...) a ira, onde a máxima regente é evitar a decepção por meio da ataraxia – a conformidade com a natureza. Aqui, a felicidade se encontra na redução das expectativas e no preparo/espera para as adversidades. A terceira concepção de felicidade aparece na sua Consolação à mãe Hélvia, escrita no exílio, para lembrar sua mãe de todas as infelicidades que já teve, pois, a infelicidade constante teria esta característica positiva: endurecer aqueles a quem incansavelmente persegue. Por fim, o conselho é afastar-se do caminho das multidões e entregar-se à filosofia, que é prática, e buscar o equilíbrio, fugindo dos prazeres frívolos, negando as voluptuosidades e exaltando a moral, típica do estoicismo romano. El objetivo del presente trabajo es señalar que la noción de filosofía como terapia, que aparece en las Disputas Tusculanas III, no es suficiente para erradicar las opiniones falsas en el marco de la sociedad, dado el carácter individual que nos propone el estoicismo. Para sustentar esta tesis, en primer lugar, retomaré las características que Foucault señala sobre el cuidado de sí en el periodo helenístico y romano, toda vez que la filosofía, entendida como una terapia para la (...) vida, se enmarca en lo que el pensador francés llama el “cuidado de sí”, esto es, la capacidad que tiene la filosofía de curar el alma para poder tener un comportamiento conforme a la naturaleza a fin de llevar una vida feliz e imperturbable. La finalidad de este análisis es mostrar en qué sentido la terapia de la que nos habla Cicerón en Tusculanas III funciona como un cuidado de sí mismo. En segundo lugar, con base en los elementos del cuidado de sí a la luz de la terapia estoica, examinaré el origen de la opinión falsa para advertir que, si bien la terapia es efectiva para una dimensión ética del comportamiento humano, resulta insuficiente para erradicar el origen de las opiniones falsas que están en el seno de la sociedad. Por último, sugeriré una posible solución para el problema de las opiniones y las emociones que se gestan en el marco de la sociedad a partir de lo que Martha Nussbaum nos dice sobre la envidia en Emociones políticas. De alguna u otra manera, los viajes han cautivado a los filósofos clásicos y medievales. Entre ellos, en la siguiente reseña se discutirá la posición de Lucio Anneo Séneca, filósofo romano-español contemporáneo de los emperadores Cayo César Germánico (Calígula) y Claudio Nerón César, de quien llegó a ser consejero personal.

As virtudes sociais são sem dúvida alguma fundamentais para preservar a harmonia e o desenvolvimento social, bem como a nossa autorrealização. Apesar de nunca ter escrito um tratado filosófico sobre este argumento, recorrendo à sua obra, Mediações, podem-se conhecer as virtudes sociais às quais o filósofo e imperador romano, Marco Aurélio, dá mais importância, a fim de garantir-se o bem-comum. Portanto, neste artigo, exponho estas virtudes sociais, mostrando, assim, como elas fundamentais para criar-se uma sociedade mais harmónica.

En el presente trabajo proponemos mostrar la presencia de elementos estoicos en La Consolación de la Filosofía de Severino Boecio, en particular en los libros I, II, III y IV. Para ello realizaremos, en un primer momento, un análisis de la Consolatio como género filosófico en donde abordaremos la obra del autor romano y sus características peculiares. En un segundo término, centraremos nuestro análisis en mostrar los elementos terapéuticos que tienen presencia en dicha obra, centrándonos en aquellos de origen (...) estoico que pueden encontrarse cuando se analizan los bienes aparentes, las pasiones que ellos generan y su relación con la Fortuna. En un tercer momento, expondremos cómo aquellas observaciones de estilo estoico desembocan en un análisis sobre la voluntad y dignidad humana. En cuarto lugar, culminaremos el trabajo con unas breves palabras finales sobre lo antes expuesto. (shrink)

What is the event? How the phenomenology of event is possible if the "event" is not the phenomenon in the classical meaning of this word? French philosopher Claude Romano discusses these questions with his Russian colleague Ruslan Loshakov. The interlocutors consider the concept of event in different contexts, paying special attention to the relationships which connect the phenomenology of event with Husserl, Bergson, Heidegger and Levinas' ideas.

L'Odyssée, le plus ancien poème de la culture occidentale, met en scène la métamorphose qui change Ulysse en lui-même sous les yeux dessillés de ceux qui échouaient jusque-là à le reconnaître. Ulysse constitue ainsi la première d'une longue série de figures donnant corps à cette opération mystérieuse : le passage de l'existence en régime d'obscurité à l'existence "en personne", dans une forme de vérité. Que signifie un tel passage? Comment s'opère cette transition? Quelles formes cette idée d'existence en personne a-t-elle (...) pu revêtir dans la pensée occidentale? Claude Romano interroge les sources, y compris lointaines, de cette idée d' "existence en vérité" telle qu'elle sous-tend notamment l'idéal moderne d'authenticité personnelle, en retraçant la généalogie de cet idéal et en exhumant certaines de ses formes plus anciennes. This paper aims to clarify some conceptual aspects of decoherence that seem largely overlooked in the recent literature. In particular, I want to stress that decoherence theory, in the standard framework, is rather silent with respect to the description of (sub)systems and associated dynamics. Also, the selection of position basis for classical objects is more problematic than usually thought: while, on the one hand, decoherence offers a pragmatic-oriented solution to this problem, on the other hand, this can hardly be seen (...) as a genuine ontological explanation of why the classical world is position-based. This is not to say that decoherence is not useful to the foundations of quantum mechanics; on the contrary, it is a formidable weapon, as it accounts for a realistic description of quantum systems. That powerful description, however, becomes manifest when decoherence theory itself is interpreted in a realist framework of quantum mechanics. (shrink)

In the recent literature, it has been shown that the wave function in the de Broglie–Bohm theory can be regarded as a new kind of field, i.e., a "multi-field", in three-dimensional space. In this paper, I argue that the natural framework for the multi-field is the original second-order Bohm’s theory. In this context, it is possible: i) to construe the multi-field as a real-valued scalar field; ii) to explain the physical interaction between the multi-field and the Bohmian particles; and iii) (...) to clarify the status of the energy-momentum conservation and the dynamics of the theory. The paper explains why the de Broglie–Bohm theory reduces to Newtonian mechanics in the macroscopic classical limit. The quantum-to-classical transition is based on three steps: (i) interaction with the environment produces effectively factorized states, leading to the formation of _effective wave functions_ and hence _decoherence_; (ii) the effective wave functions selected by the environment—the pointer states of decoherence theory—will be well-localized wave packets, typically Gaussian states; (iii) the quantum potential of a Gaussian state becomes negligible under standard classicality conditions; therefore, (...) the effective wave function will move according to Newtonian mechanics in the correct classical limit. As a result, a Bohmian system in interaction with the environment will be described by an effective Gaussian state and—when the system is macroscopic—it will move according to Newtonian mechanics. Taking the problem of perception and illusion as a leading clue, this article presents a new phenomenological approach to perception and the world: holism of experience. It challenges not only Husserl’s transcendentalism, but also what remains of it in Heidegger’s early thought, on the grounds that it is committed to the skeptical inference: Since we can always doubt any perception, we can always doubt perception as a whole. The rejection of such an implicit inference leads to a relational paradigm of (...) Being-in-the-World that differs from Heidegger’s on many points. (shrink)

Throughout the Works and Days (WD), Hesiod reaffirms and promotes his audience’s belief in the reality of the supernatural — that is, the gods of Olympus, whose power the poet clearly takes seriously, given the somber warnings that populate the final calendrical portion of the piece. Drawing on S.I. Johnston’s recent The Story of Myth, as well as the work of folklorists K. Hänninen and G. Bennett, I outline the techniques Hesiod employs to render believable the influence of the divine (...) in both the distant past and the contemporary period. Hesiod constructs a story world familiar to his audience in order to bolster the credibility of the supernatural events, both mythical and contemporary, that he reports. When speaking of the gods’ influence in his own time, Hesiod remains firm on the fact of the gods’ continued intervention only in concrete, mundane phenomena experienced by each of his audience members. Otherwise, the poet tends toward vague language, leaving his audience to come to their own conclusion about the influence of the divine. To encourage a positive conclusion, Hesiod creates an analogy between abstract concepts, such as Strife, and the anthropomorphic gods of myth. Using these strategies, Hesiod imbues WD with belief in divine influence in the world, past and present. (shrink)
