Cassirer stellt die alte Frage nach dem Wesen des Menschen neu und beantwortet sie, indem er die klassische Antwort mit weitreichenden Folgen abwandelt: Er bestimmt den Menschen als ein Wesen, das Symbole schafft und sich (...) durch Symbole mit seinesgleichen und der Welt verständigt. This paper investigates whether AI can possess wisdom, a complex and deeply human capacity. We adopt an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on philosophy, 4E cognition, Material Engagement Theory, and engaged epistemology, to argue that wisdom is a dynamic force unfolding through meaningful life experiences and resonant interactions with the world. Central to our discussion is Rosa's concept of resonance, essential for fostering personal growth, emotional empathy, as well as existential and bodily connectedness to the world and its unfolding into an uncertain (...) future. Despite the advanced capabilities of AI/Large Language Models (LLMs), we demonstrate their inability to embody wisdom due to their lack of deep sense-making, embodied interaction, and meaningful engagement with the world and future potentials. We emphasize the need for cultivating human wisdom to ensure technological advancements enrich rather than diminish the human experience, advocating for a balanced and reflective human-technology relationship. In this fascinating autobiography from the foremost genius of twentieth-century physics, Max Planck tells the story of his life, his aims, and his thinking. Published posthumously, the papers in this volume were written for the general reader and make accessible his scientific theories as well as his philosophical ideals, including his thoughts on ethics and morals. Max (Karl Ernst Ludwig) Planck was a German physicist and philosopher known for his quantum theory, for which he won the Nobel Prize in (...) Physics in 1918. Planck was born in Kiel, Germany, in 1858 to an academic family, and he valued education from a young age. He attended the Universities of Munich and Berlin to study physics under the great scientific leaders Kirchhoff and Helmholtz. His early work mainly focused on the study of thermodynamics, and in 1900 he published a paper on his quantum theory that would change the face of modern physics. Planck worked as a professor at Berlin University his entire life, and he also served as the president of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Promotion of Science. During World War II, Planck experienced great hardships while he remained in Germany but openly opposed the Nazi regime. One of his two sons was executed during this time for an unsuccessful attempt on Hitler's life, and Planck's home in Berlin was eventually bombed. He continued to write on physics and philosophy until his death in 1947. (shrink)

Shortest possible axiomatizations for the implicational fragments of the modal logics S4 and S5 are reported. Among these axiomatizations is included a shortest single axiom for implicational S4—which to our knowledge is the first reported single axiom for that system—and several new shortest single axioms for implicational S5. A variety of automated reasoning strategies were essential to our discoveries.

Posings as such form part of hierarchic thinking and prevailing practices and are thus subsumed in negativity. Idle talk, seemingly dimming one's view, has been replaced by hallucination, dreams, and illusions. It is so very difficult to see through them and to realize that there is nothing there but them.

The Erlöserkirche at Bad Homburg was built between 1903 and 1908 at the instigation of Kaiser Wilhelm II. It combines a neo-Romanesque exterior with Norman-Sicilian mosaics inside. Both were „Germanic“ to the emperor, and the church embodied his all encompassing claim to the tradition of the medieval Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Alternatively, the contemporary Byzantinist Ernst Gerland pointed to a Byzantine origin of the Norman-Sicilian models (and thus subtly contradicted the „pan-Germanic“ myth). This „Byzantine“ reading (...) has prevailed ever since, but does not stand up to scrutiny. It only serves to obscure the „pan-Germanic“ concept of the church. This contribution restores the „Germanic“ understanding and makes the point that the latter must be acknowledged in order to make proper sense of the church’s art and architecture, but also in order to face (rather than to downplay and conveniently forget) the racist-chauvinist character of German imperialism. Das Bemühen um eine methodische Grundlegung der Geisteswissenschaften führte Cassirer zu dem Schluß, daß die allgemeine Erkenntnistheorie in ihrer tradierten Form nicht ausreiche, um die verschiedenen Grundformen des Weltverstehens bestimmt voneinander abzugrenzen. An die Stelle des rein rationalen Erkennens, dem in der Philosophie der Neuzeit immer ein Primat zukam, tritt die Pluralität von symbolischen Formen, in denen sich jeweils eine spezifische Spontaneität des menschlichen Geistes bekundet. "Die Kritik der Vernunft", so heißt es in der "Philosophie der symbolischen Formen", "wird damit (...) zur Kritik der Kultur". In den 1942 im Göteborger Exil veröffentlichten fünf Studien "Zur Logik der Kulturwissenschaften" unternimmt Cassirer eine genauere wissenschaftstheoretische Bestimmung des geisteswissenschaftlichen Feldes. Ausgangspunkt allen Kulturverstehens ist für ihn die Ausdruckswahrnehmung im Gegensatz zur Dingwahrnehmung in den exakten Wissenschaften. Die Kulturwissenschaften arbeiten nicht in erster Linie mit Natur- und Geschichtsbegriffen, sondern mit Form- und Stilbegriffen. Nicht "die Individualität der Gesetze" ist das Erkenntnisziel der Kulturwissenschaften, "sondern die Totalität der Formen, in denen sich menschliches Leben vollzieht". In diesem für die im 20. Jahrhundert entstehenden Kulturwissenschaften fundamentalen Werk entwickelt Cassirer bereits präzise das Motiv seiner Anthropologie, das 1944 im "Essay on Man" (Philosophische Bibliothek Band 488) zur Entfaltung kommt. Im Anhang beigegeben ist der 1939 ebenfalls in Göteborg gehaltene Vortrag "Naturalistische und humanistische Begründung der Kulturphilosophie". (shrink)
