Continued failure to limit emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are causing global climate change has brought increased attention to climate engineering technologies, which actively modify the global environment to counteract heating and climate disruptions caused by elevated greenhouse gases. Some proposed forms of CE, particularly spraying reflective particles in the upper atmosphere to reduce incoming sunlight, can cool the average temperature of the Earth rapidly and cheaply, thereby substantially reducing climate-related risks. Yet CE interventions provide only (...) imperfect corrections for the climatic and other environmental effects of elevated greenhouse gases, and carry their own environmental risks. Moreover, they may also increase other risks, by weakening political support for essential emissions reductions or providing new triggers for international conflict. These technologies thus require international governance, but also pose novel and severe challenges to current international laws and institutions. Effective governance of CE will require a capacity to make decisions regarding the conditions, if any, under which specific interventions are authorized, plus realtime operational oversight of any interventions that are conducted. Decision processes must be effectively linked with scientific research and assessment, and with institutions to manage and respond to threats of CE-related conflict. We advance preliminary suggestions to address two priority areas for early investigation: how international cooperation on early CE research can help develop shared norms that can grow robust enough to support future decision needs; and how early research and development on CE can be made to complement and encourage, rather than undermine, parallel efforts to reduce climate risks by cutting emissions. While robotics has benefited from inspiration gained from biology, the opposite is not the case: there are few if any cases in which robotic models have lead to genuine insight into biology. We analyze the reasons why biorobotics has been essentially a one-way street. We argue that the development of better tools is essential for progress in this field.

Als ich meine Schrift "Zur Einsteinschen Relativitätstheorie" veröffentlichte, fanden sich viele Kritiker, die mir in den Schlußfolgerungen, die ich aus der Entwicklung der neuen Physik gezogen hatte, zwar zustimmten, die aber an diese Zustimmung die Frage knüpften, ob ich, als "Neu-Kantianer", derartige Folgerungen hätte ziehen dürfen. Die vorliegende Schrift ["Determinismus und Indeterminismus in der modernen Physik"] wird vielleicht in noch weit höherem Grade solchen Fragen und Zweifeln ausgesetzt sein. Aber ich glaube, daß derartige Einwände das Wesen und die historische Tendenz (...) des "Neukantianismus", wie er von den Begründern der "Marburger Schule", von Hermann Cohen und Paul Natorp verstanden worden ist, verkennen. Natorp hat in einem Aufsatz "Kant und die Marburger Schule" ausdrücklich erklärt, daß es niemals die Meinung der "Marburger Schule" gewesen sei, an den Lehrsätzen Kants unbedingt festhalten zu sollen oder zu wollen. "Die Rede von einem orthodoxen Kantianismus"- so betont er - "war niemals begründet; sie hat mit der Weiterentwicklung der Schule auch jeden fernsten Schein von Berechtigung verloren" [Auszug aus dem Buch]. The concept ‘personhood’ lies at the center of contemporary disputes concerning whether certain biological interventions are ethical. Thus, if ‘personhood’ could be located or its existence evidenced by observations available to biologists, then each of these controversies could be resolved in biology’s own terms. I argue that this is a fruitless task. The attempt to track down a material object, ‘personhood,’ reveals ignorance of an important metaphysical presupposition underlying contemporary culture’s Cartesian/Kantian concept of ‘personhood’.

This article investigates the importance of the evolution of Adorno’s interpretation of Husserl for the formation of his own philosophy. The weakness of Husserl’ notion of immediate data is revealed within the light of Hans Cornelius’s Transcendentale Systematik . When Adorno discovers in his Habilitationsschrift the importance of the social setting and ideological function of theory, he departs from Cornelius’ transcendentalism as norm for his reflection - and this insight is deployed against Husserl. Le Descartes de Cassirer est un livre profondément original, tant par ses thèmes, qui touchent à la fois au fondement de la métaphysique cartésienne qu'aux rapports avec Corneille ou Christine de Suède, que par sa méthode, laquelle emprunte autant à Goethe qu'à Cohen et entretient une discussion de fond avec Dilthey. Ce livre appartient ainsi à la fois à une série d'études sur l'idéalisme propre à l'école de Marbourg, série en laquelle il côtoie par exemple le Descartes'Erkenntisstheorie de Natorp, et (...) à des études biographiques plus proprement cassirerienne telles par exemple son Kant's Lebel' und Lehre, ou encore ses études sur Rousseau. En dépit de la limpidité du propos et de l'écriture, ici magistralement rendus par la remarquable traduction de Philippe Guilbert, c'est un principe herméneutique très novateur qui commande le travail biographique. Il s'agit de concevoir l'unité dynamique de la vie et de l'œuvre en la reconduisant à la personnalité vivante dont la racine transcendantale est la spontanéité. Si donc Cassirer s'efforce ici de restituer l'unité de la vie et de l'œuvre de Descartes et renvoie à un principe exégétique goethéen, c'est néanmoins sur fond d'une philosophie proprement transcendantale, et donc en se distinguant de Dilthey. Car cette herméneutique, que Cassirer applique notamment à Rousseau, Kant, Goethe, Schiller et Cohen, n'est rendue possible que par l'unité synthétique et productive du sujet que fonde la philosophie des formes symboliques. La structure même de l'ouvrage qui, partant des "Problèmes fondamentaux du cartésianisme", inscrit ensuite cette œuvre dans l'ensemble de son époque, marque bien les niveaux historiographiques ici au travail : on s'élève progressivement de l'histoire vivante d'une œuvre à la Geistesgeschichte, à l'histoire de l'esprit à laquelle elle contribue et en laquelle elle trouve sa pleine signification. Ce livre est donc tout aussi bien une passionnante étude sur Descartes, dont les traductions partielles et fort "libres" ne donnaient jusqu'à aujourd'hui qu'une médiocre idée, qu'un maillon essentiel de la reconstitution de la modernité philosophique.
