The study of Austrian and German modernist literature has a long and venerable history in this country. There have been no attempts yet, however, to reassess German and Austrian literary modernism in light of current discussion of modernity and postmodernity. Addressing a set of historical and theoretical questions central to current reevaluations of modernism, this volume presents American readers with a state-of-the-art account of German modernism studies in the eighties. Essays by Jochen Schulte-Sasse, Russell A. Berman, Peter Uwe Hohendahl, Judith (...) Ryan, Mark Anderson, Klaus R. Scherpe, Biddy Martin, Klaus L. Berghahn and Acbar Abbas, center around German and Austrian literary and philosophical prose of the early twentieth century. texts by well-known authors -Kafka, Rilke, Musil, Doblin, Benjamin, Benn, and Junger - and less well-known ones -Franz Jung, Carl Einstein, Ernst Bloch, Lou Andreas-Salome, are examined. Particular attention is paid to the processes and strategies by which certain experiences of "modern life" are translated into modern aesthetic forms. The unique contribution of this volume is that it combines theory with an attempt to reintroduce an historical and contextual dimension. The Dual State, first published in 1941, remains one of the most erudite books on the legal origins of democracy and dictatorship. It provided the first comprehensive analysis of the rise and nature of National Socialism, and was the only such analysis written from within Hitler's Germany. Fraenkel's concept of the dual state, being the normative state and the the prerogative state. It retains its vital relevance for the theory of democracy in the twenty-first century. Kontextualistische Wissenstheorien wurden bisher hauptsächlich zur Auseinandersetzung mit dem Skeptiker entwickelt. Meines Erachtens sind sie dabei wenig erfolgreich, bieten aber einen vielversprechenden Ansatz zur Auflösung des bekannten Gettier-Problems. In diesem Aufsatz setze ich mich vor allem mit einer Überlegung Stewart Cohens auseinander, die zu zeigen scheint, dass auch der Kontextualist eine vom Wissenszuschreiber unabhängige „anti-Gettier-Bedingung“ braucht. Hätte er damit recht, so wäre vom Kontextualismus kein Fortschritt bei der traditionellen Wissensanalyse zu erwarten. Zur Widerlegung seines Arguments schlage ich zunächst eine Wissensdefinition (...) vor, die als „radikal kontextualistisch“ bezeichnet werden kann, insofern darin allein Faktoren, die dem Kontext des Wissenszuschreibers zuzurechnen sind, eine Rolle spielen. Indem ich deutlich mache, wie ich zu meinem radikalen Kontextualismus komme, zeige ich, wie man Cohens Argument entgeht. Bei dieser Überlegung spielt allerdings die enge Verbindung zwischen dem Begriff des Wissens und dem des guten Informanten, gegen die vor allem Ansgar Beckermann argumentiert hat, eine entscheidende Rolle. Auch mit Beckermanns Argumenten setzte ich mich daher auseinander. (shrink)
