This essay considers how Augustine's writings on the imago Dei might shed light on contemporary human dignity discourse and on debates about the sources, uses, and translations of these two terms. Attending to developments in Augustine's expositions of scriptural texts and metaphors related to the imago Dei, I argue that his writings exhibit three distinct conceptions of the imago Dei that correspond to three accounts of the imago Dei and human dignity offered by Pico, Luther, and Aquinas, respectively. This plurality (...) of meanings suggests that appeals to an "Augustinian" understanding of the imago Dei or human dignity threatens to confuse rather than resolve debates about the sources and uses of these terms. As long as Augustine remains an influential voice within the Christian tradition regarding the meaning of the imago Dei, the question of its translation into the secular idiom of human dignity will remain a live one because Augustine himself inaugurated quite diverse yet legitimate modes of interpreting these central tropes. 이 글의 목적은 동서양의 철학적 관점에서 품격있는 사회를 살펴보는 것이다. 구체적으로 필자들은 공리주의자 밀의 품위감과 유가철학의 인의(仁義)와 신(信) 개념에 기초해서 품격있는 사회를 분석한다. 품격을 뜻하는 영어 단어 diginity의 라틴어 어원은 dignitas이다. 서양철학자 중에서 diginity를 언급한 철학자는 존 스튜어드 밀(J. S. Mill)이다. 밀에 의하면 인간에게는 인간고유의 품위감(a sense of dignity)이 있기 때문에 결코 단순히 쾌락의 양에 의해서만 지배되지 않는다. 밀은 이익융합의 원리(the principle of the fusion of interest)를 받아들이고 있는데, 이것은 자기발전과 타인에 대한 배려라는 두 가지 가치를 중심으로 전개된다. 인간이 그저 (...) 자신의 쾌락과 행복만을 추구한다면 동물에 불과할 것이다. 그러나 품위감이 있는 사람들은 타인을 생각하고 배려할 것이고 이러한 감정을 밀은 품위감이라고 주장하는 것이다. 정신과의사인 이시형 박사는 품위감을 구체적인 덕목으로 제시하고 있다. 첫 번째 덕목은 감정을 누르고 이성으로 행동하는 절제이다. 두 번째 덕목은 나와 다름을 인정하는 포용이다. 세 번째 덕목은 약간의 여유로도 함께 즐거울 수 있는 배려이다. 유가철학의 두 가지 기둥은 인의 즉 사랑과 정의인데, 인은 타자에 대한 배려이며 의는 인의 가치를 구체적인 행동으로 옮기는 실천방법이다. 인간은 누구나 인과 의를 알고 실천할 수 있는 능력을 본래 갖고 있다. 유가철학에서 말하는 품격있는 사회는 인(사랑)과 의(정의)가 바탕이 되고 그것이 시의에 맞게 예와 지로 아름답게 개화하는 사회이다. 인간사회에서 사랑과 정의가 서로 제대로 구현되기 위해서는 신뢰(信)는 가장 중요한 덕목이 될 수밖에 없다. 신뢰의 덕목을 강조하는 이유는 신뢰가 없는 사랑은 공허하고, 신뢰가 없는 정의는 위선으로 흐를 수 있기 때문이다. 공자도 정치의 요점을 묻는 제자에게 “백성들이 믿지 않으면 나라가 존립할 수 없다.”고 말했다. 품격 있는 사회란 신뢰라는 도덕적 원칙이 바탕이 되어서 사랑과 정의가 꽃피는 사회라고 할 수 있다. 이 글은 고통에 따른 자살이 칸트의 입장에서 정당화될 방안이 있는지에 관해서 탐구한다. 자살에 관한 칸트의 입장을 보다 느슨하게 해석하고자 하는 현대의 입장은, 주로 자율성의 큰 손실이 일어날 경우에 있어서 칸트의 입장이BR/자살을 허용할 수 있다고 주장한다. 그러나 여러 가지 방식의 안락사 허용에 대한 현대의 관행은 이와 같이 자율성에 근거해서가 아니라 주로 육체적 이유에 따라 안락사를 허용한다. 따라서 칸트의 입장에 대한 기존의 해석은 고통에 따른 안락사를 허용하는 현실의 관행을 충분히 반영하지 못한다는 문제가 있다. 이 글은 칸트 윤리학에서 고통에 근거한 자살의 허용 가능성을 (...) 탐구하기 위해 먼저 자살에 대한 칸트의 사례론을 면밀히 검토한다. 그 결과로 칸트에게서 자살이 직접적인 목적이 되는 행위는 결코 완전하게는 허용될 수 없고, 그리하여 고통을 회피하고자 수행하는 자살 역시 금지된다는 점을 먼저 확인한다. 다음으로는 칸트의 입장에서 고통에 따른 자살에 대한 완전한 정당화는 불가능하지만, 그가 받아 들였던 인간의 유한성으로부터의 간접적 정당화는 가능하다는 점을 살펴보고, 이로부터 매우 극단적인 고통이 주어지는 경우에 한하여 안락사가 허용될 수 있다는 귀결을 이끌어낸다. The topic of this book is a fundamental philosophical question: why should I be moral? Philosophers have long been concerned with the legitimacy of morality's claim on us, especially with morality's ostensible aim to motivate certain actions of all persons unconditionally. While the problem of moral normativity - that is, the justification of the binding force of moral claims - has received extensive treatment analytic moral theory, little attention has been paid to the potential contribution that phenomenology might make to (...) this central debate in metaethics. -/- In The Phenomenology of Moral Normativity, William H. Smith takes up the question of morality's legitimacy anew, drawing contemporary moral philosophers, particularly Christine Korsgaard and Stephen Darwall, into conversation with present-day phenomenologists like John Drummond and the phenomenological philosophy of Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, and Emmanuel Levinas. -/- The results of this juxtaposition are surprising: utilizing a two-part account of moral normativity, Smith contends that the ground of morality itself is second-personal, rooted in the ethical demand intrinsic to other persons, while the ground for particular moral-obligations is first-personal, rooted in the subject's avowal or endorsement of certain moral norms within a concrete historical situation. Thus, Smith argues that phenomenological analysis allows us to make sense of an idea that has long held intuitive appeal, but that modern moral philosophy has been unable to render satisfactorily, namely, that the normative source of valid moral claims is simply other persons and what we owe to them.
