Through this choral tribute to Domenico Jervolino we hope to have reconstructed the breadth of his philosophical interests, his theoretical lines but above all the bonds of friendship and esteem that over the years have intertwined-in high Ricoeurian style-between several Italian and International figures. For this reason, this is a ‘choral’ remembrance and homage, a way of witnessing the esteem towards the scholar with whom interest and reflections have been shared over the years, in the conviction that to germinate them, (...) they need to be share and participated among those who have a common vocation. A vocation (and the interest towards a reflection) that seeks in History, in Psychoanalysis, in the texts, places where to meet men and try to build together “shared worlds”, for others to inherit, within an infinite thread of interpretations. In an era dominated by information and communication technologies, when science continues to amaze us with its discoveries and technological applications, and when social media are controlling part of our lives and social relationships, does philosophy still make sense? Is humanistic knowledge still necessary today as an indispensable part of our human world?

This volume contains the final portion of Ingarden's extensive treatment of the existence of the external world. Entitled Welt und Bewußtsein, it is divided into four chapters: "Das Problem der Identität eines individuellen zeitlich bedingten Gegenstandes," "Die Form eines Seinsgebietes und die Form der Welt," "Das Problem der Form des reinen Bewußtseins," and "Anwendung der gewonnenen formal-ontologischen Ergebnisse auf das Problem der Existenz der Welt." The plan of the work calls for a third part, material ontology, as the systematic complement (...) to Pt. I, existential ontology, and Pt. II, formal ontology. In this volume, therefore, the problem is not resolved, although Ingarden has reduced the statements of the alternative solutions to just two—H. C. (shrink)

The Latin text is established from the first edition of the Epistola and Hollis' edition. Since the author regards Popple's English translation, which is here edited and reprinted en regard, as having been supervised and approved by Locke himself, it is taken to be as authoritative as the Latin and accordingly is used in establishing the Latin text. The translation is established from its first and second editions. Montuori has not always indicated his departures from Locke's spelling and punctuation, although (...) the pagination of the collated texts is indicated in the margin. Locke's second and third Letters Concerning Toleration are not reprinted here.—H. C. (shrink)

Plamenatz here attempts to revive political philosophy through an examination of the great modern thinkers. In the introduction, he meets objections to political philosophy. His defense rests on the claim that there are fundamental and enduring problems common to political philosophy and social science, and that philosophers often discuss them more profoundly and succinctly than social scientists. He has difficulty meeting the charge that political philosophy is unscientific. Since the question of the nature, legitimacy and purpose of political philosophy is (...) thematic in every major writer Plamenatz examines, one expects to find it stressed, yet it is noticed only cursorily, perhaps because the author agrees with the critics that political philosophers "were under illusions about their theories." Volume I contains chapters on Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu, Hume, Burke and Rousseau; Volume II on Bentham, early socialism, Hegel and Marxism.—H. C. (shrink)
