Désemparés, nous oublions la fraternité, notion évangélique et républicaine, qui nous permet de vivre ensemble. Pour raviver cette fraternité qui se dérobe à nos yeux, la seule solution est de refonder une foi commune, non pas confessionnelle, mais un élan de vie partagé qui nous porte et (...) nous rassemble. Dans cet essai inattendu et vivifiant, Guillaume de Tanoüarn ausculte en philosophe la crise de notre société. Convoquant Mandeville et Adam Smith, Diderot et Rousseau, Augustin et Kant, il relit la modernité sans la condamner et s'interroge sur les moyens de renouer avec une fraternité vivante. Les auteurs de cet ouvrage ont noué des liens avec la pensée du politique, et leur examen porte donc sur ce qu'ils ont convenu d'appeler la rénovation de la pensée de la fraternité. Les auteurs proposent ici une expérimentation qui consiste à lire la fraternité en se débarrassant de l'idéologie du progrès et en faisant le pari que la fraternité dans sa constellation (...) première a encore bien des choses à nous apprendre. This article examines the concept of "brotherliness" as presented in Max Weber's sociological studies of religion. It argues that Weber presents a complex, if at times implicit, understanding of a number of contrasting forms of brotherliness: charismatic, Puritan, mystic, and medieval Christian. The article suggests that although these contrasting forms have been largely overlooked by Weberian scholars, they add an important dimension to Weber's understanding of the costs and paradoxes of Western rationalization.

In Solidarity, Hauke Brunkhorst brings a powerful combination of theoretical perspectives to bear on the concept of "democratic solidarity," the bond among free and equal citizens. Drawing on the disciplines of history, political philosophy, and political sociology, Brunkhorst traces the historical development of the idea of universal, egalitarian citizenship and analyzes the prospects for democratic solidarity at the international level, within a global community under law. His historical account of the concept outlines its development out of, and its departure from, (...) the less egalitarian notions of civic friendship in the Greco-Roman world and brotherliness in the Judeo-Christian tradition. He then analyzes the modernization of Western societies and the destruction of the older, hierarchical solidarities. The problems of exclusion that subsequently arose -- which stemmed from growing individualization in society as well as from the exclusion of certain groups from the benefits of society -- could be solved only with democratic solidarity in the form of its "institutional embodiment," the democratic constitution. Finally, Brunkhorst examines the return of these exclusion problems as a result of economic globalization. Analyzing the possibilities for democratic self-governance at a global level, Brunkhorst finds in recent global protest movements the beginnings of a transnational civic solidarity. Brunkhorst's normative and sociological account, mediating between these two perspectives, demonstrates the necessity of keeping normative requirements systematically attuned with conditions of social reality. As economic actions generate questions about justice, the duty of economicethical reflection consists in contributing to the search for answers to these questions. Justice is a complex ethical term, therefore the question for the ))right« idea of justice needs to asked. In doing so we give reasons for our view that justice cannot be defined without considering aspects of solidarity, thus emphasizing a specific perspective within theological ethics. Thereby we discuss interpretations of justice in utilitarianism als well as J. Rawls's (...) theory of justice, which succeeds in making the principle of brotherliness more tangible. Therefore this paper considers a topical economic-ethical problern - justice with or without aspects of solidarity?; the relation between teleology an deontology? and - offers at the same time a mediation between ethics an economics which is argumentative al weil as furthering understanding und dialogue. This paper investigates a sibling metaphor central to Rosenzweig’s reading of the Song of Songs in The Star of Redemption, in which the lovers yearn to be united in societal fraternity. His interpretation is marked by fraternal tropes and the subsequent effacement of gender. Rosenzweig transposes the erotic energy in the Song from a celebration of difference to a longing for sameness, a move that has exegetical, philosophical, and theological implications. Ultimately, the erotic sphere of revelation is surpassed by neighborly (...) “brotherliness” in communal redemption. (shrink)

Les débats en éthique environnementale entre l'anthropocentrisme, le biocentrisme, l'écocentrisme et les autres écoles tirent leurs sources essentielles dans une hiérarchisation des êtres, qui se fonde sur une sorte d'idéologie. La question débattue est la suivante : qui de l'être humain ou animal ou végétal doit être le centre et le principal bénéficiaire de l'agir moral sur l'environnement? Pourtant, il est possible de procéder autrement en considérant chaque degré d'être comme une porte d'entrée dans la réflexion éthique sans passer par (...) la compétition d'ordre axiologique sur la valeur intrinsèque de chacun. La notion d'ancestralité, entendue comme 'précédence fondatrice', semble convenir pour fonder l'exigence éthique sur la fraternité universelle des êtres. Celle-ci est antérieure à toute spécification des êtres en matière, vie végétale, vie animale et vie humaine. Une autre voie est possible et porte un nom bien connu mais que nous feignons d'oublier : la Fraternité. Il est temps de redonner à l'oubliée de la République toute sa force. Non, la fraternité n'est pas cette vieille cousine que, selon l'expression de Régis (...) Debrav, nul ne songe à inviter à danser. Elle est plutôt cette jeune femme passionnée et passionnante qui nous permet de construire une alternative aux logiques de guerre et de repli identitaire. Entrons dans la danse avec elle. (shrink)

Eine Hilfe, die schmerzenden Erfahrungen des Augenblicks in einen grosseren Zusammenhang zu bringen. Wenn etwa Alfred Grosser in seiner Rede den Bogen zu seiner eigenen Biografie hin zu den Banlieues unserer Tage in Paris spannt. "Ich bin seit 1937 Franzose, unsere Erziehungsministerin ist Franzosin seit 1995, unser Premierminister seit 1982, die Burgermeisterin von Paris (...) seit 1973, Nicolas Sarkozy ist Fluchtlingssohn. Niemand wird sagen, sie sind nicht Franzosen. Aber die jungen Leute in den sogenannten "Vororten" sind fast alle franzosische Staatsburger und werden total diskriminiert. Also, sie haben die franzosische Identitat, gewiss, aber sie suchen eine andere Identitat und das ist der Islam. Nicht der Islam war zuerst da, sondern die Diskriminierung.". (shrink)
