While the Psalter imparts instruction to the faithful on the ways of God, it also teaches them to pray. Simply put, prayer is the effort to ask something of God and to anticipate a divine response in word, deed, or presence.

The Paradigmatic King of the Book of Psalms.Constantin Rusu - 2013 - Human and Social Studies 2 (1):125-148.
In the modern age, the hermeneutics of the sacred text knows a differentiated approach, defined by the belonging to a certain school or exegetic group, researchers being more and more interested from an analytic point of view in the strong connection between history and theology, in its phenomenology. For specialized research, the interdisciplinary approach introduces new and surprising perspectives to the results, as the thematic of the Psalms underlines not only the interest rejoiced of by the fascinating Hebrew poetics, (...)

Gregory of Nyssa's Treatise on the Inscriptions of the Psalms.Gregory of Nyssa - 1995 - Oxford University Press UK.
Gregory of Nyssa made important contributions to both theological thought and the understanding of the spiritual life. He was especially significant in adapting the thought of Origen to fourth century orthodoxy. The early treatise on the inscriptions of the Psalms shows the early stages of the development of Gregory's thought. This book presents the first translation of the treatise in a modern language. The annotations show Gregory's indebtedness to the thought of classical antiquity as well as to the (...)

Psalterium Scholasticorum: Peter Lombard and the Emergence of Scholastic Psalms Exegesis.Marcia L. Colish - 1992 - Speculum 67 (3):531-548.
The Book of Psalms was unquestionably the book of the Old Testament most beloved by patristic and medieval exegetes. Seen as a guide to the Christian life and as a prophecy of Christ and his church, the Psalms received extended attention from Hilary of Poitiers, Augustine, and Cassiodorus and from their Carolingian and Anglo-Saxon successors. After the ninth century, monastic writers continued to display a sustained interest in the text. As had always been the case, so (...)

    Psalm 101: A supplication for the restoration of society in the late post-exilic age.Philippus J. Botha - 2016 - HTS Theological Studies 72 (4):1-8.
This article investigates the form and purpose of Psalm 101 from two perspectives: As a unique composition from the late Persian or early Hellenistic period, and in terms of its function within the context of Book IV of the Psalter. It is suggested that it was designed by exponents of wisdom and Torah piety to serve as a 'royal psalm' at exactly this location in the Psalter. It was meant to offer support to faithful Yahwists by criticising the apostate (...)

Does God Micromanage the World? Learning about the Cosmos from the Book of Job.Jozef Jančovič - 2023 - Human Affairs 33 (2):158-171.
The biblical book of Job contains more extensive discussion of the cosmos and God’s role in it than any other book in the Bible with the possible exception of Psalms. The main issue of the book is God’s justice towards the sorely tried protagonist, Job. The major distinction between the book of Job and the thinking of the general ancient Near Eastern culture is the role of God’s justice and wisdom in the operations of the (...)

The dawn of two dawns: The mythical, royal and temporal implications of dawn for Psalms 108 and 110.Lodewyk Sutton - 2017 - HTS Theological Studies 73 (3).
Shachar is identified primarily as a primary noun that is translated as ‘dawn’ within the Hebrew Bible, yet one must not ignore its mythical dimension. Within the Davidic trilogy Psalms 108–110, Shachar takes on an important function, concerning the unity and the message of the trilogy within Book V of the Book of Psalms. A process of restoration and hope is announced within Psalm 108 and started within Psalm 110 for Israel after a time of war (...)

  32. the Comparison Between two Religious Notions: Salih صالح in holy Quran and Tsaddiq (צד'ק) in Holy Psalms (مقایسه مفهوم صالح در قرآن با مفهوم صدیق (צד'ק) در مزامیر داوود علیه السلام).Akbari Reza & Mohsen Feyzbakhsh - 2013 - Religions and Mysticism 46 (1):1-17.
There is a quotation in the Holly Quran from the book of Psalms in 21:105: “The righteous shall inherit the earth”. A similar sentence can be found in Psalm37:29: צַדִּיקִים יִֽירְשׁוּ־אָרֶץ וְיִשְׁכְּנוּ לָעַד עָלֶֽיהָ. A comparison between these verses would illustrate that “صالح” is the Quranic equivalent of the Hebrew word “צַדִּיקִ”. This equivalence would allow us to compare usages of “صالح” in Quran and “צַדִּיקִ” in the book of Psalms. This comparative study will show that: (...)

What makes this a beautiful book? Concision and depth provide a rich contrast for beauty. Indeed, the distilled chapters are patterned for meditative rhythms: personal connection to a particular Psalm, interpretation, invitation for reflection, even an original psalm written by Blair Gilmer Meeks that is included in each chapter. Here psalms are more than ancient voices; they are relevant voices in the contemporary period. Feeling, relevance, and creativity make this little book a powerhouse meditative tool for those (...)

Jerome and Augustine on wealth and poverty in Psalms 107–150.Pauline Allen & Jacobus P. K. Kritzinger - 2021 - HTS Theological Studies 77 (1):9.
The purpose of this article was to compare Jerome’s and Augustine’s sermons on the fifth book of the Psalms with regard to their views on the rich and the poor. After a brief consideration of the different audiences of Jerome and Augustine, we focused on their attitudes to wealth and poverty, and almsgiving and its relationship to eschatology. In both Jerome’s and Augustine’s commentaries we were confronted with problems regarding the nature of the collections, the composition of the (...)

A Spirituality of Exile: Responding to God's Absence.Lee Beach - 2017 - Journal of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care 10 (1):33-50.
In the journey of faith almost everyone experiences times of spiritual desolation when our sense of God's presence is stripped away and our certainty about his faithfulness is deeply eroded. Times like this are intensely disorienting as they leave us grasping for answers, but even more importantly searching for a way forward. The literature of the Bible provides us with both experiential companionship and language to guide our journey through the desolate places of spiritual experience. The prayer language of exile (...)

St. Thomas Aquinas’s Postilla super Psalmos as the work of a Dominican friar and theologian at prayer.Jörgen Vijgen - 2021 - Studium: Filosofía y Teología 24 (48):195-217.
St. Thomas’s commentary on the Book of Psalms, known as the Postilla super Psalmos, gives us a privileged insight into the mind and heart of a Dominican friar and theologian at work and at prayer. In this contribution I will elucidate these claims on the basis of elements found in his commentary and in particular in the areas of prayer and the liturgy, Christ, Mary and the Church, Sin and Mercy and Contemplation and Preaching.

The Hatata inquiries: two texts of seventeenth-century African philosophy from Ethiopia about reason, the creator, and our ethical responsibilities.Ralph Lee, Mehari Worku & Wendy Laura Belcher (eds.) - 2023 - BOSTON: De Gruyter.
The Hatata Inquiries are two extraordinary texts of African philosophy composed in Ethiopia in the 1600s. Written in the ancient African language of Geʿez (Classical Ethiopic), these explorations of meaning and reason are deeply considered works of rhetoric. They advocate for women's rights and rail against slavery. They offer ontological proofs for God and question biblical commands while delighting in the language of Psalms. They advise on right living. They put reason above belief, desire above asceticism, love above sectarianism, (...)

The diagnosis of psychopathic personality disorder has salience for forensic clinical practice. It influences decisions regarding risk, treatability and sentencing, indeed, in certain jurisdictions it serves as an aggravating factor that increases the likelihood of a capital sentence. The concatenation of symptom that is associated with modern conceptions of the disorder can be discerned in early writings, including the book of Psalms. Despite its forensic clinical importance and historical pedigree the concept remains elusive and controverted. In this paper (...)
