A buzzword, a “win-win”, or a signal towards the future of agriculture? A critical analysis of regenerative agriculture.Kelly R. Wilson, Mary K. Hendrickson & Robert L. Myers - forthcoming - Agriculture and Human Values:1-13.
As the term regenerative agriculture caught fire in public discourse around 2019, it was promptly labelled a buzzword. While the buzzword accusation tends to be regarded as negative, these widely used terms also reflect an important area of growing public interest. Exploring a buzzword can thus help us understand our current moment and offer insights to paths forward. In this study, we explored how and why different individuals and groups adopt certain key terms or buzzwords, in this case the term (...)

Ovid, Epistulae Ex Ponto 4.8, Germanicus, and the Fasti.K. Sara Myers - 2014 - Classical Quarterly 64 (2):725-734.
InEpistulae ex Ponto4.8, one of the last poems written from exile (dated to 15 or 16c.e.), Ovid expresses his increasing hopes for Germanicus' assistance in effecting his recall to Rome. Though ostensibly addressed to his stepdaughter's father-in-law, P. Suillius Rufus, the poem contains a petition to Germanicus (27–88), as a poet to a poet, which promises future commemoration in Ovid's poetry if he is removed from Tomis:clausaque si misero patria est, ut ponar in ullo, qui minus Ausonia distet ab Vrbe loco, unde (...)

Dangerous Dependencies: The Intersection of Welfare Reform and Domestic Violence.Nancy A. Myers, Andrew S. London & Ellen K. Scott - 2002 - Gender and Society 16 (6):878-897.
Using longitudinal, ethnographic data, the authors examine how the pursuit of self-sufficiency in the context of welfare reform may unintentionally encourage some women to develop alternative dangerous dependencies on abusive or potentially abusive men. In this article, the authors document how women ended up relying on men who have been abusive to them either for instrumental assistance or for more direct financial assistance as they struggled to move from welfare to work. The authors also document how some extremely disadvantaged and (...)

    The Culex’s Metapoetic Funerary Garden.K. Sara Myers - 2020 - Classical Quarterly 70 (2):749-755.
TheCulexis now widely recognized as a piece of post-Ovidian, possibly Tiberian, pseudo-juvenilia written by an author impersonating the young Virgil, although it was attached to Virgil's name already in the first centuryc.e., being identified as Virgilian by Statius, Suetonius and Martial. Dedicated to the young Octavian (Octauiin line 1), the poem seems to fill a biographical gap in Virgil's career before his composition of theEclogues. It is introduced as aludus, which Irene Peirano suggests may openly refer to ‘the act of (...)

Creativity in Medical Education: The Value of Having Medical Students Make Stuff.Michael J. Green, Kimberly Myers, Katie Watson, M. K. Czerwiec, Dan Shapiro & Stephanie Draus - 2016 - Journal of Medical Humanities 37 (4):475-483.
What is the value of having medical students engage in creative production as part of their learning? Creating something new requires medical students to take risks and even to fail--something they tend to be neither accustomed to nor comfortable with doing. “Making stuff” can help students prepare for such failures in a controlled environment that doesn’t threaten their professional identities. Furthermore, doing so can facilitate students becoming resilient and creative problem-solvers who strive to find new ways to address vexing questions. (...)

  18. First order classical modal logic.Horacio Arló-Costa & Eric Pacuit - 2006 - Studia Logica 84 (2):171-210.
The paper focuses on extending to the first order case the semantical program for modalities first introduced by Dana Scott and Richard Montague. We focus on the study of neighborhood frames with constant domains and we offer in the first part of the paper a series of new completeness results for salient classical systems of first order modal logic. Among other results we show that it is possible to prove strong completeness results for normal systems without the Barcan Formula (like (...)

    Non-adjunctive inference and classical modalities.Horacio Arló Costa - 2005 - Journal of Philosophical Logic 34 (5/6):581 - 605.
The article focuses on representing different forms of non-adjunctive inference as sub-Kripkean systems of classical modal logic, where the inference from □A and □B to □A ∧ B fails. In particular we prove a completeness result showing that the modal system that Schotch and Jennings derive from a form of non-adjunctive inference in (Schotch and Jennings, 1980) is a classical system strictly stronger than EMN and weaker than K (following the notation for classical modalities presented in Chellas, 1980). The unified (...)

This essay defends the view of G. C. Pande that, contrary to received opinion, "ānanda" (bliss, felicity) is accepted by Śaṅkara (ca. 788-820) as a feature of Brahman consistent with and parallel to sat (being) and cit (consciousness). It also includes a counterargument by B. N. K. Sharma, and in conclusion offers a reasoned judgment of the arguments of Śaṅkara and these two contemporary philosophers.

  24. Higher Schreier Theory in Cubical Agda.David Jaz Myers & Zyad Yasser - forthcoming - Journal of Symbolic Logic:1-17.
Homotopy type theory (HoTT) enables reasoning about groups directly as the types of symmetries (automorphisms) of mathematical structures. The HoTT approach to groups—first put forward by Buchholtz, van Doorn, and Rijke—identifies a group with the type of objects of which it is the symmetries. This type is called the “delooping” of the group, taking a term from algebraic topology. This approach naturally extends the group theory to higher groups which have symmetries between symmetries, and so on. In this paper, we (...)

Centering: Proposals for an Interdisciplinary Research Center.Greg Myers - 1993 - Science, Technology and Human Values 18 (4):433-459.
Governmental organizations funding science m several nations are creating large research centers that draw on several disciplines and that focus research on an area of immediate use to industrial concerns. I analyze eight proposals for a U.K. center devoted to human communication. I argue that the boundaries that such a center seeks to cross— between areas of knowledge, between disciplines, between academic and nonacademic research—are constructed in the proposals for strategic purposes m the immediate situations. The study supports other recent (...)

Towards an understanding of ethical behaviour in small firms.S. Vyakarnam, Andrew R. Bailey, A. Myers & D. Burnett - 1997 - Journal of Business Ethics 16 (15):1625-1636.
Allthough small business accounts for over 90% of businesses in U.K. and indeed elsewhere, they remain the largely uncharted area of ethics. There has not been any research based on the perspective of small business owners, to define what echical delemmas they face and how, if at all, they resolve them. This paper explores ethics from the perspective of small business owner, using focus groups and reports on four clearly identifiable themes of ethical delemmas; entrepreneurial activity itself, conflicts of personal (...)

A student commentary on Plato's Euthyphro.Charles Platter - 2019 - Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press. Edited by Plato.
The Euthyphro is crucially important for understanding Plato's presentation of the last days of Socrates, dramatized in four brief dialogues: Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, and Phaedo. In addition to narrating this evocative series of events in the life of Plato's philosophical hero, the texts also can be read as reflecting how a wise man faces death. This particular dialogue contains Socrates' vivid examination of the intentions of Euthyphro to prosecute his own father for murder and culminates in an attempt to understand (...)
