Reasoning by analogy in chemical history: fallacies and guidelines. In chemistry (and natural science in general) reasoning in terms of analogy may be of great practical values as well as of theoretical significance. At the same time, however, the use of analogy is risky and the results are uncertain. In alchemy and iatrochemistry analogies between the living and the non-living nature have been carried too far. At the end of the 19th century an analogy was drawn between chemical phenomena and (...) the Darwinian theory of evolution. Another example of an overexaggerated analogy can be found in Lavoisier’s theory of acids, where oxygen was considered to be the general principle of acidity. Reasoning by analogy is mostly based on an inner conviction. It leads to provisional predictions in such cases where the required facts are not or incompletely at our disposal. (shrink)

This article is devoted to Fichte’s theory of intersubjectivity in his Foundations of Natural Right (1796/97). I will attribute three theses to Fichte. Firstly, an ontological thesis: To be a free rational being consists of socially ascribing a normative status. Secondly, a transcendental thesis: The conviction that other rational beings exist is a necessary condition for consciousness of oneself as a free rational being. Thirdly, a phenomenological thesis: Recognition of other subjects is immediate, not the result of some argument by (...) analogy. It is, however, argued that Fichte’s belief-directed argument is insufficient to preclude skepticism regarding the existence of other subjects. Der vorliegende Aufsatz ist Fichtes Theorie der Intersubjektivität in seiner Grundlage des Naturrechts nach Prinzipien der Wissenschaftslehre (1796/97) gewidmet. Darin werden Fichte drei Thesen zugeschrieben. Erstens eine ontologische These: Ein freies Vernunftwesen zu sein besteht in einer sozialen Zuschreibung, nämlich in der Zuschreibung eines normativen Status. Zweitens eine transzendentalphilosophische These: Die Überzeugung, dass es andere Vernunftwesen gibt, ist Bedingung der Möglichkeit des Selbstbewusstseins als eines freien Vernunftwesens. Drittens eine phänomenologische These: Die Anerkennung von Fremdsubjektivität ist etwas Unmittelbares; es handelt sich nicht um das Ergebnis eines Analogieschlusses. Es wird jedoch argumentiert, dass Fichtes auf notwendige Überzeugungen ausgerichtete Argumentation Skepsis hinsichtlich der Existenz anderer Subjekte nicht widerlegen kann. (shrink)
