The paper introduces the reader to the contemporary trends in the interpretation of Frege\'s thought. The point of departure in this description points out that the way of looking at Frege\'s accomplishment depends on the manner of characterising contemporary philosophy, in particular analytical philosophy. In order to have a closer look at the above relationship we have outlined the style of historical-systematic studies as proposed by Dummett. A series of historical facts are given with a view to explain the sources (...) of the renaissance of Frege\'s thought in contemporary philosophy. A description of various interpretations of the thoughts of Frege is given in line with four oppositions which appeared in contemporary literature: 1) genius - continuator; 2) epistemologist - philosopher of language; 3) theorist of meaning - theorist of thought; 4) anti-naturalist - realist. Noticing the drawbacks of the above characterisation, an alternative historical reconstruction is proposed. This proposal consists in distinguishing a basic category or object whose inquiries have become important and dominated various kinds of philosophical enterprise in a certain philosophical period. The category of proposition have been chosen to be such an object. At the same time, it is pinpointed that owing to this choice one may characterise Frege\'s accomplishment and explain from many points of view the sources of the relationship between Frege\'s thought and analytical philosophy. Robert Boyle jest autorem oryginalnej koncepcji mediacji pomiędzy sferą religii a nauki. W artykule przedstawiono wybrane elementy myśli filozoficznej Boyle’a, które wyznaczają jego ujęcie zagadnienia relacji wiara a nauka. W literaturze przedmiotu poglądy Boyle’a kwalifikuje się często jako przykład podejścia nazywanego „koncepcją dwóch ksiąg” albo „Boga jako zapchaj dziury”. W artykule przedstawiono polemikę z tymi interpretacjami myśli Boyle’a i wskazuje się, że jego koncepcja jest bliska współczesnemu stanowisku chrześcijańskiego teizmu naturalistycznego.

The article deals with the Greek idea of circular thought and especially with the question of its presence and meaning in the philosophy of Parmenides of Elea. A new interpretation of the fragment DK 28 B 5, which is crucial to this issue, is proposed. It is suggested that the circularity of thought refers to the deductive mode of the arguments in the “Aletheia” and to the proleptic character of some of the Parmenidean statements. Both fragment B 5 (to be (...) placed probably at the beginning of the deduction of the “Aletheia”) and B 8.50-51 (the end of the “Aletheia”) may be successfully interpreted on the basis of this idea. The proposed interpretation makes clear why the circularity of thought does not oppose the linearity of the reasoning and why the logical character of cognition does not contradict its immediacy for Parmenides. “Przeglad Powszechny” first appeared in 1884, when the Jesuits in Krakow agreed to take over “Przeglad Lwowski” from Fr. Edward Podolski, who had been its editor. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the editors-in-chief of the “Przeglad” were Marian Ignacy Morawski SJ, Jan Pawelski SJ, Jan Urban SJ and Jan Rostworowski SJ. Thanks to their efforts and extensive prior editorial experience, “Przeglad” stood for a high level of quality, and was one of the most highly valued social (...) and cultural journals devoted to religious, philosophical, ethical, cultural, historical and political issues. The overriding aims set out by the editors of the review were the dissemination of properly Catholic principles of conduct and obedience to the Church. The article will present the social thought of the Jesuits as they appeared in “Przeglad Powszechny” from the time of its inception until the recovery of Poland’s independence. (shrink)

The aim of this essay is to show Cezary Wodziński to be a thinker of evil. First, I discuss the difference between a thinker and a scientist. The latter develops various abstract ideas. The former produces literature as a kind of protective coating against a single destructive and dangerous thought which is haunting him. The thought that was haunting Cezary Wodziński is the idea that the being itself is evil. Since the thought of being is also a part of this, (...) it inevitably participates in the malice of existence. According to Wodziński, the 20th century was the epoch characterized by the epiphany of evil. Thinking is not innocent in the face of this epiphany. This thesis has important political implications. Both the affirmation and the critique of the existing political order appear to be tainted with evil. (shrink)

The purpose of this article is to propose a synthesis of Jacques Poulain's philosophical reflection on language and its importance for human being and for the society. To do this, we begin with presenting what Poulain has constantly established in the light of anthropobiological knowledge in his various works by showing that the child does not directly enter the world through senses or action, but through language and that it cannot enter the world and become a subject able to think (...) and act in isolation, but necessarily through the intermediary of a Third of speech. The same goes for the author at the institutional level, since man, as a being of language, has only been able to transform himself indirectly, through the intermediary of this Third of speech, which first took the form of the gods, then by making the detour of the judgment. Today, as Poulain argues in polemic with Jürgen Habermas, there can be no other basis for global communication than transcultural linguistic understanding, ie. language constitutes the space where man can be recognized, exercise judgment and strive for harmony with others.
