This paper develops a synthesis of three basic societal dimensions. These three qualify as basic dimensions by virtue of being collectively inclusive, mutually exclusive to a higher degree than any alternative dimensions we have explored, and universally applicable, i.e., to all social situations. We take the six transact dimensions to be such a set. Of these six we here develop a synthesis of three (acts, people, and time) which we take to be most basic, not in the sense of relative (...) importance to human life and welfare, but in the sense of being completely mutually exclusive, of being explicitly as well as implicitly necessary in the modelling of a very large proportion of social situations, and of being not at all elusive when observed as here in all-or-none units for the acts, “noses counted” for the people, and discrete units of time. For these reasons we consider this set of dimensions especially suitable for first attempts at synthesized rational and predictive models (as distinct from purely analytical, empirical and descriptive models). It is anticipated, however, that as initial efforts increase our scientific skill, essentially the same modelbuilding techniques will be applicable when the “trickiest” or most compounded of the transact dimensions, namely values and circumstances, are also dealt with. Cet article poursuit un objectif méthodologique, la présentation comparée de trois modes de représentation de la polysémie d’un item : grille, carte et arbre sémasioogique et son illustration autour d’un phylum étymologique, celui du verbe latin tornare qui est à la source, entre autres des verbes français tourner, italien tornare et anglais to turn et de leurs dérivés et composés. Dans l’éventail des sens et des constructions des trois verbes, tourner occupe une position intermédiaire, mais se révèle plus proche de (...) to turn que de l’italien tornare. A partir du sens unique du verbe latin (« fabriquer sur un tour de pottier ») chacun des trois verbes à configuré son espace sémantique en fonction de l’ensemble de ses concurrents, y compris les verbes morphologiquement apparentés. Today’s bodies are akin to ‘walking sensor platforms’. Bodies either host, or are the subjects of, an array of sensing devices that act to convert bodily movements, actions and dynamics into circulative data. This article proposes the notions of ‘disembodied exhaust’ and ‘embodied exhaustion’ to conceptualise processes of bodily sensorisation and datafication. As the material body interfaces with networked sensor technologies and sensing infrastructures, it emits disembodied exhaust: gaseous flows of personal information that establish a representational data-proxy. It is this (...) networked actant that progressively structures how embodied subjects experience their daily lives. The significance of this symbiont medium in determining the outcome of interplays between networked individuals and audiences necessitates that it is carefully contrived. The article explores the nature and function of the data-proxy, and its impact on social relations. Drawing on examples that depict individuals engaging with their data-proxies, the article suggests that managing a virtual presence is analogous to a work relation, demanding diligence and investment. But it also shows how the data-proxy operates as a mode of affect that challenges conventional distinctions made between organic and inorganic bodies, agency and actancy, mortality and immortality, presence and absence. Agrifood scholars commonly adopt “a matter of fact way of speaking” to talk about the extent of neoliberal rollout in the food sector and the viability of “alternatives” to capitalist food initiatives. Over the past few decades this matter of fact stance has resulted in heated debate in agrifood scholarship on two distinct battlegrounds namely, the corporate food regime and the alternative food regime. In this paper I identify some of the limitations of speaking in a matter of fact way (...) and of focusing on capitalist and neoliberal economies as the yardstick by which to assess all food economy initiatives. Using stories of bananas in Australia and the Philippines I advocate for a new mode of critical inquiry in food scholarship that focuses on matters of concern. Following Bruno Latour I use the term critical inquiry to refer to research methods and thinking practices that multiply possible ways of being and acting in the world. The new mode of critical inquiry I propose centers on enacting three broad research matters of concern. These are gathering and assembling economic diversity human actancy and nonhuman actancy. I argue that through becoming critical minds in the Latourian sense researchers can play a key role in enacting economic food futures in the Anthropocene. (shrink)
