On the Medicine Imageries of Tang Poetry
Abstract
Tang drug imagery in social and cultural significance implied twofold: first, due to illness of the body expressed in the political metaphor, for the treatment of diseases of the drug which was given to rescue the meaning of life distress; Secondly, although alchemy service food in the Tang Dynasty has a broad social base, but the alchemy technique has only been mastered by a few people, cultured people's preferences for immortality, rather than taking more than reflected in the refining area. Yun Yi drug imagery are subject to change at different times, from the initial expression of literati fame and fortune, the preservation of innocent recluse feelings, to reflect people's Official and hidden text, devoid of the source of spiritual pursuit, and finally to seek fame and fortune as a symbol of . In other words, the relationship between drugs and seclusion culture, reflects the internal structure of the Tang Dynasty literati class changes as well as their spiritual transformation. There are two aspects of the societal cultural meanings implied by medicine in Tang poetry. Firstly, medicine as the tretments for disease had been endowed significances to get rid of the poverty-straits life. Secondly, the literati liked to take the immortality pills rather than to make them since most of the literati did not know how to make the pills in Tang dynasty. The medicine imageries were changeable in different periods from the attitude of living tranquilly without seeking fame and wealth at the early period to the symbol of striving for official rank at the last period. In other words, the relation between medicine and reclusive culture indicated the changes of the internal structure of the literati social stratum and their minds in Tang dynasty
