Who is writing? The Development and Application of the AI-Integrated Writing Framework (AWAI)

Abstract

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has profoundly transformed academic writing practices, challenging traditional notions of authorship, originality, and learning strategies in academic writing. Despite the widespread adoption of AI-driven writing assistance tools, academic writing instruction remains largely rooted in traditional methods, failing to effectively integrate these technologies into the learning process. This paper proposes a conceptual framework for AI-integrated academic writing, termed the Academic Writing and AI Integration (AWAI) Framework. Drawing from an interdisciplinary perspective, this framework aims to bridge the gap between conventional writing competencies and AI-assisted composition, seeking a balance between domain-specific knowledge, academic writing conventions, and AI literacy. As a result of extensive research on AI-enhanced learning environments, the AWAI framework is designed to equip both students and educators with the skills necessary to ethically and effectively utilize AI tools in academic writing. By examining the interplay among scholarly content knowledge, writing conventions, and AI literacy, this paper provides theoretical insights and practical recommendations to support the integration of AI into academic writing instruction while maintaining academic rigor and originality. The framework contributes to discussions on technology integration in higher education by offering implications at theoretical, pedagogical, and methodological levels. Through this study, we redefine academic writing in the AI era and provide a structured approach for navigating the evolving landscape of human-AI collaboration in scholarly communication.
