Abstract

This dissertation analyzes the connections between the life and writing of George Santayana and the process of modernization that American society went through at the turn of the century. By exploring Santayana's views on art, culture, morality, religion and gender roles, this study shows the dilemmas that faced the U.S. as it abandoned the Victorian way of life to embrace 20th century consumer culture
