The odessa myth in the “enterprises of memory”

Abstract

Odessa myth as a complex of comprehensions, which allows to “read the city” and could be revealed on each level of culture. The point of this text is Odessa myth, how it appears represented in so-called “enterprises of memory”. Author if this article analyses the “enterprises of memory”, which use the Odessa theme, all around the world, but not inside Odessa. The outlines of “outer view” is important for investigation of the city myth. About forty restaurants had been analyzed from in optics of dishes, decorum and conceptions, placed at restaurants’ sites. The conclusions on the character of Odessa nostalgia reveal the outlines of contemporary brand of Odessa and pushed the certain directions of urban studies. Author concludes that Odessa myth contains the picture of “Paradise lost”, which reveals itself in sense of coming back in childhood, to Grandma, into the friendly space of Multilanguage yard. This myth contains the strange chronological mixes, where unites the times of pre-revolutionary city, of soviet “communalka” and of bandit and happy city of 20th. The enterprises of memory use mainly the images of pre-revolutionary Odessa, not contemporary city.
