Abstract

Through a carefully analysis of all occurrences of this formulation within the Cartesian corpus, this work seeks to show that semel in vita is a relevant rhetorical resource that is linked to the decisive moment of Cartesian philosophy to carry out a restructuring of knowledge starting from the radical and preliminary investigation on the scope of human understanding. It is thus concluded that the Cartesian strategy of scientific reformulation, from its youth, depends on an inquiry into pure understanding, but that this inquiry must be carried out and finished, since it provides the resources to follow in further investigations.
