Internalizing Externalities through a Libertarian Universal Basic Income
Abstract
Libertarianism generally regards a Universal Basic Income as impermissible on the basis of redistribution fundamentally violating strong property rights. Libertarian arguments for a UBI regard the property violation as a necessary evil required to strengthen liberty overall. This article argues for a justification of a UBI under which the funding tax is in itself in alignment with Libertarian values, rather than a necessary evil, based on the externalities caused by a society that it increasingly centered around intangible fruits of labor. In this society a UBI is key to internalize these positive externalities permeating society and the funding tax strengthens property rights rather than weakness them.
