Abstract

I teach a workshop on mending and repair at a local haberdashery shop called RayStitch in North London, and I usually begin each session by describing how my interest started. It was because of a sweater that was all worn out and full of holes, with thin and threadbare knitting in its forearms. It had already been repaired in several places, and that repair was visible. The thick white sweater had belonged to my great-uncle Roland and had been mended over the years by his sister, my great-aunt Elizabeth.
