Abstract

Une histoire des instituteurs, qui restitue leurs combats et leurs conditions de vie dans le contexte difficile de l'instauration de l'école laïque en France. Les figures des professeurs sont aussi évoquées à travers des textes de Rabelais, Montaigne, Rousseau, Lamartine, Hugo, Ferry puis à travers des témoignages de fils d'instituteurs : Jules Romain, M. Pagnol, G. Pompidou, Alain-Fournier.
