Abstract
) as is as about is a two-part music. Part one, ), is a 29-minute work in sounds on magnetic tape as implemented through loudspeakers. This work is about the transformation of the sounds of my clarinet "improvisation"--via various electronic technologies--such that my gestural language is heard to articulate new sound; search for appropriate performance context; search for appropriate verbal signification for the work as a whole. ;Part two, )-"Book", is a 277-page work in words, drawings, photographs, and scores in conventional notation, collected in book form. Part two is in two sections. Section one is a narrative which treats of the making of part one, and of five antecedent compositions which significantly inform it. Section two is in the form of eight appendices, consisting of those scores, texts, and notes, either pertinent to the works discussed in section one. ;Taken together, both tape and book constitute a two-part music, no one part of which is the music. ;This music is a bipartite structure in sounds, words, or other graphics, consisting of a that which is said, and that which is said about that which is said--a work and its meta-work , together, comprising a new work. ;This music is about my desire to stipulate that the substance of my music is not only that which I make, but that which I think about that which I make. As such, it advances the idea of musical composition as thought in words about thought in sounds, resulting in a structure consisting of both. Sub-topical "abouts" within this larger "about" include: sounds and words as music as well as notes on paper as music; search for places between previously defined contexts,
