Attitudes of Secondary School Students Towards Meaning of Life: A Comparison Between Anatolian Imam Hatip High School and Other High School Students (Example of Erzurum Province)

Abstract

The main purpose of this research is to comparatively examine the attitude levels of students studying in Anatolian Imam Hatip High Schools and other types of high schools towards the meaning of life. The sample of the study is 975 students selected by random sampling method, studying at the 12th grade of Anatolian Imam Hatip High Schools and other types of high schools in Erzurum in the 2022-2023 academic year. The research was designed according to the survey model, which is one of the quantitative research methods. The data of the study were collected with the personal information form and the Meaning and Purpose of Life Scale. SPSS-26 program was used in the analysis of the collected data. According to the research findings, it was seen that the students' level of attitude towards the meaning of life, and the average taken from the Meaning and Purpose of Life sub-dimension of the scale were high. In addition, it was determined that the average taken from the Meaninglessness of Life and Lack of Purpose sub-dimension was moderate. These averages were very close to each other between Anatolian Imam Hatip High Schools and other high school students. When the obtained scores were examined, it was seen that there was no significant difference between the students' attitudes towards the meaning of life according to gender, age levels and school type (p>0.05).
