Abstract

Neal Wood, Emeritus Professor of Political Science at York University, Toronto, died in Devon on 17 September 2003 after a short illness. He was known personally to many readers of History of Political Thought and even more widely through his contributions to the journal and his many other scholarly publications. Together with colleagues who established the Conference for the Study of Political Thought in the late 1960s, Neal played a major role in cementing the history of political thought as a central part of degree programmes in history and political science, and as an intellectually vibrant field of research and publication throughout the English-speaking world. Much of Neal’s work has focused on ancient and early-modern political thought. His books include Class Ideology and Ancient Political Theory, The Politics of Locke’s Philosophy, John Locke and Agrarian Capitalism, and Cicero’s Social and Political Thought, a wonderfully written and very insightful work, combining well-balanced textual analysis with rich contextual scholarship.
