Abstract

/// The visage presents itself as enigmatic; it desorients the phenomenon. Its meaning avoids the "being" and "not-being" alternative, since it comes from beyond; it refers to an Other, whicch Levinas calls in the third person "illéité" - a neologism created by the author in order to explain the enigmatic presence of the Other in the visage of one's neighbour. In this enigmatic relationship, the I receives his election and his unicity. His liberty realizes itself by being at the disposal of the Other, at his service, thus giving glory to the Infinite in saying: Here I am.
