Abstract
This paper, based on the recent UNESCO report Our Cultural Diversity, makes a plea for including art as an integral part of culture. Serious doubts are raised about the long-term effects oflopsided scientific-technical education. The pioneering but neglected ideas of Goethe, Schiller, Steiner, Tagore and Read on the role of art in total human development have been discussed. According to the author, the critical innovation in the sphere of education is now going to be on the borders between art, science and religion.
