Abstract

Many existentialists have been bothered by the notion of a human essence. Personalfreedom for them is of the utmost importance, and should not be limited by a personal essence. In an effort to avoid determinism, some have chosen to deny that a person has aninnate essence. This denial is problematic and leads to an incorrect theory of the humanperson. Zubiri offers a solution to this dilemma through the development of the concept ofopen essence. Open essence captures the uniqueness of the human person and reflectsthe openness that the person experiences in relation to the world. Zubiri never looses sightof the fact that the human person has limits and imperfections. This paper explores theexistential question of the possibility of human essence and offers insights from Zubiri'swork.Muchos filósofos existenciales problematizan la idea de esencia humana. Para ellos lalibertad personal es sumamente importante, y no debe ser limitada por una esencia personal.
