Abstract
This article examines the genesis of the term “biosphere”, the details of its content as a relational concept of human beings towards their planetary environment, as well as its current scientific and everyday use. It compares the term with similar concepts, in particular “biodiversity” and the advantages and disadvantages of the concepts. It describes when, why and how the term “biosphere” has emerged in the context of UNESCO (for example as regards UNESCO biosphere reserves). The article draws the conclusion that the concept is suitable and relevant in the Anthropocene.
