Social Trinitarianism and Tritheism Again: A Response to Brian Leftow

Abstract

Brian Leftow argues forcefully that social Trinitarianism "cannot be both orthodox and a version of monotheism." In response to Leftow, I offer a historical perspective and make a case that his argument is unsuccessful. I argue that Leftow’s criticisms of social Trinitarianism are either founded upon questionable intuitions or can be met, and I highlight some important questions that remain for a modalistic doctrine of the Trinity
