Abstract

It is argued that graham's claim ("philosophical quarterly", Volume 28, Pages 234-241, July, 1978) that philosophy cannot make political recommendations is, Although true, Not established by either of his arguments. Graham's first argument establishes that philosophy cannot guarantee to persuade in politics, But it fails to establish that philosophy cannot recommend. Graham's second argument is to the effect that philosophy cannot provide definite knowledge, Which is what is required in politics. This view of philosophy is inferred from the idea of philosophy as an inquiry. This inference is invalid because an inquiry presupposes that knowledge is possible
