Abstract

The paper gives a brief outline of the social and political philosophy of Jacques Maritain. His political philosophy is based on Christian vision of human dignity, Christian ethics and on the principles of personalism. In his political philosophy Maritain argues, that authentic democracy is possible only if we are able to see its true Christian roots. He distinguishes between „state“ and „body politic“, while man as an individuality is of a rank inferior to the state, but as a personality he is of a rank superior to it. According to Maritain the body politic should be persona_listic, communal, pluralist, theistic or Christian
