Abstract

Parmi les papiers de Pascal conservés dans les Pensées, on peut repérer des notes préparatoires à divers écrits que l'on connaît par ailleurs ; cela n'implique pas qu'ils soient nécessairement étrangers au projet d'apologie. Pascal recueille tous les matériaux dont il entrevoit l'utilité, dans ses brouillons comme dans ses lectures, religieuses ou profanes. Et il en écarte d'autres : ainsi, les « Pensées retranchées » sont extérieures au grand projet, et les liasses sur les miracles semblent en avoir été écartées à un moment donné. « Lever les obstacles », c'est aussi écarter les arguments qui nuiraient à l'efficacité de la démarche apologétique. Ainsi sont écartés la plupart des thèmes de la controverse des Provinciales, ainsi que les thèmes habituels de la « théologie naturelle ». Pascal's papers preserved in the Pensées contain preparatory notes for certain writings familiar to us in other ways as well. This by no means implies that these notes are alien to his apologetic enterprise. Pascal gathers all the materials that he sees as possibly useful, both in his drafts and in his readings, religious and profane. And he sets other material aside ; thus, those fragments of the Pensées that are « withdrawn » lie outside his great plan and the dossiers on the miracles do seem to have been set aside in this way at some point. « Removing the obstacles » also means setting aside the arguments that would detract from the effectiveness of the apologetic line of reasoning. In this way, most of the themes from the Provinciales controversy are left out, as are the standard ones of « natural theology »
