Abstract

Moral Philosophy and the Novels of George Eliot has two interdependent aims. The first is to give a much needed account of the philosophical aspects of Eliot's fiction. The second is to evaluate possible approaches to giving such an account. In connection with the latter, I find that what I call the 'traditional' model of morality proves inadequate for an examination of Eliot's novels, and I focus instead on the insights needed to develop an alternative understanding of morality that can effectively draw out the moral significance of Eliot's work
