Abstract

What is the gradual development of a sense of sensibility towards the self through history? With the emergence of self-consciousness during the Renaissance and the importance of the distinction that Luther drew between the inner and external life of the individual, a space opened up that allowed for the possibility of the self-authorisation of the self. What consequences follow for the relationship of the self to modern conceptions of subjectivity?
