Abstract

In the face of accelerating environmental change, scientists are increasingly relying on nature’s own “alarm systems”—ecosystem sentinels. In their recent review, Hazen et al. (2024) examine how specific species serve as indicators of ecosystem disruption in the Anthropocene, the current epoch characterized by widespread human-induced environmental change.
