H. Porter Abbott is Professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara and Acting Director of the UCSB Interdisciplinary Humanities Center. He is the author of two books on the work of Samuel Beckett, a book on the diary strategy in fiction, and a forthcoming book, Narrative: an Introduction (Cambridge, 2001). Several of his recent articles have adapted evolutionary and cognitive approaches to the study of narrative [Book Review]
