Abstract

Fénelon a consacré dix années de sa vie à lutter contre l’amalgame que les jansénistes tentaient de faire entre leur doctrine et le thomisme de gratia ; en de testamentaires objurgations, il n’a cessé de défendre une version de la théologie augustinienne qui fût compatible avec les canons tridentins et qui rompît irréconciliablement avec la lecture biaisée qu’en donnaient, selon lui, les disciples de Jansénius. Impressionnés par l’érudition et l’autorité dont faisait preuve l’archevêque de Cambrai dans un combat dont il voulait de toutes ses forces remporter l’issue, les contemporains se sont pourtant demandé, et non sans raison, si Fénelon n’avait pas, volontairement ou non, passé son objectif et s’il n’avait pas condamné le thomisme en proscrivant le jansénisme. Fenelon spent ten years of his life struggling against the amalgam that the jansenists tried to establish between their doctrine and de gratia Thomism; in testamentary reproaches, he tirelessly defended a version of Augustinian theology that was compatible with tridentine canons and which irreconcilably broke with the biased interpretation proffered, in his opinion, by the disciples of Jansenius. Impressed by the erudition and authority shown by the archbishop of Cambrai in a combat he employed all his powers to win, his contemporaries nonetheless asked themselves, and not without reason, whether Fenelon had not, voluntarily or otherwise, gone beyond his goal and whether he had not condemned Thomism in proscribing Jansenism. Die Zeitgenossen des Erzbischofs von Cambrai waren beeindruckt von seiner Gelehrsamkeit und seiner Autorität in einem Kampf, den er unter allen Umständen gewinnen wollte; sie haben sich jedoch auch, und nicht ohne Grund, die Frage gestellt, ob Fénelon nicht, gewollt oder ungewollt, über sein Ziel hinausgeschossen hat, und ob er durch die Kritik am Jansenismus nicht auch den Thomismus verurteilt hat
