Abstract

One finds a vitalistic conception of religion as much in the first works of Ortega as inthose of the young Zubiri, a conception in which religious emotion consists in the respectfor and the seriousness of life, in contrast to frivolity. Zubiri will share this Ortegian vitalism in his own conception of religion. But starting in 1931 there is manifested in Zubiri adeparture from Ortega’s ideas that will lead to a conception of “personal religion,” whosemeaning he expounded in his 1935 work, “In Regard to the Problem of God.” In his analyses of human subjectivity and human existence, Zubiri believes he has discovered that evenmore fundamental than existence and even than life itself is the person. Thus Zubiri supersedes in this way the focus of Heidegger and Ortega, with his defense of our implantation in reality and with the radical basing of religion in one’s personal life—aspectswhich he will develop in his mature philosophy of religion, starting from his planting of thetheological problem in religation.
