Abstract

In the Alexis Tocqueville's research to support the values of freedom in the middle of the democratic society marked for the equality of conditions and the passions that stem from it, religion has a preponderant place. This article aims to show how Tocqueville discusses the coherence between religion and freedom. Secondly, this essay studies direct and indirect influences of religion in Tocqueville's North America, all this to argue how religion, in so far as it responds to the democratic requirements, becomes one of the main democratic political institutions, for religion helps to govern freedom and has an energetic value moralizing and encouraging societies in search of human person greatness as well.
