Abstract

Clémence RoyerRoyer, Clémence (1830–1902) was the first translator of Darwin’sDarwin, CharlesOn the Origin of SpeciesOn the Origin of Species into French. She prefaced her translation with a long text and included several notes. She defended the theory of evolution against creationismCreationism, but she developed a view of organic evolution that was more ideological than scientific. This paper examines Royer’s changes from the original text, which led DarwinDarwin, Charles to request another French translation of his work. Overall, Royer'sRoyer, Clémence work falls squarely within the scope of the history of “Après Darwin” that Jean Gayon has meticulously analyzed in his work.
