Abstract

This book is typical of those which philosophers in the British tradition produce when they wish to take a ‘bird’s-eye view’ of philosophy. But like so many others in the same mould, ‘philosophy’ here must be taken to mean ‘British Philosophy’. Mr Newell calls his book The Concept of Philosophy but regrettably considers as examples only philosophers whose writings are in the British tradition. Continental philosophers, past and present, are ignored. This is the main thing which I find unsatisfactory about this book.
