Abstract

In the present renewal of theology one central question has been to the forefront: how are we to distinguish what Pope John called ‘the deposit itself of faith’ from ‘the manner in which this is expressed’; or to be more explicit: the substance of the faith, from those expressions of it which have been conditioned by such factors as the cultural heritage of a certain era?
