Abstract
The first divers and diving operations under the ice in Antarctica are presented. Through the 1963/1964 season, divers under the ice were Willy Heinrich, unknown U.S. Navy divers, Jim Thorne, Donald Johnson, Verne E. Peckham, John S. Bunt, Carleton Ray, David O. Lavallee, Elmer T. Feltz, Gerald Kooyman, and Willard I. Simmonds, Jr. Other facets of early Antarctic ice diving are presented: Russian diving, lake diving, and underwater diver shots. Early open water Antarctic and subantarctic diving is mentioned but is not a focus.
