Abstract

In his commentary on the Mencius 6A : 15 passage "the organ of the heartmind is thinking," Zhu Xi writes: "The heart-mind is capable of thinking and this thinking is its functional role ".1 The heart-mind is also said to "possess a multitude of li and respond to ten-thousand events ". Zhu Xi regularly associates this heart-mind as "thinking" that "responds to ten-thousand events" with a special process he refers to as "zhijue" 知覺.
